IN  THE  SPIRIT  OF  PROPHECY

The Spirit of Prophecy, Volume Four, p 337-40 (TM 472-75, CS 154-55, Mar 163)
As the people of God approach the perils of the last days, Satan holds earnest consultation with his angels as to the most successful plan of overthrowing their faith.  He sees that the popular churches are already lulled to sleep by his deceptive power.  By pleasing sophistry and lying wonders he can continue to hold them under his control.  Therefore he directs his angels to lay their snares especially for those who are looking for the second advent of Christ, and endeavoring to keep all the commandments of God.
Says the great deceiver: "We must watch those who are calling the attention of the people to the Sabbath of Jehovah; they will lead many to see the claims of the law of God; and the same light which reveals the true Sabbath, reveals also the ministration of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, and shows that the last work for man's salvation is now going forward.  Hold the minds of the people in darkness till that work is ended, and we shall secure the world and the church also.
"The Sabbath is the great question which is to decide the destiny of souls.  We must exalt the Sabbath of our creating.  We have caused it to be accepted by both worldlings and church-members; now the church must be led to unite with the world in its support.  We must work by signs and wonders to blind their eyes to the truth, and lead them to lay aside reason and the fear of God, and follow custom and tradition.
"I will influence popular ministers to turn the attention of their hearers from the commandments of God.  That which the Scriptures declare to be a perfect law of liberty shall be represented as a yoke of bondage.  The people accept their minister's explanations of Scripture, and do not investigate for themselves.  Therefore by working through the ministers, I can control the people according to my will.
"But our principal concern is to silence this sect of Sabbath-keepers.  We must excite popular indignation against them.  We will enlist great men and worldly-wise men upon our side, and induce those in authority to carry out our purposes.  Then the Sabbath which I have set up shall be enforced by laws the most severe and exacting.  Those who disregard them shall be driven out from the cities and villages, and made to suffer hunger and privation.  When once we have the power, we will show what we can do with those who will not swerve from their allegiance to God.  We led the Romish Church to inflict imprisonment, torture, and death upon those who refused to yield to her decrees, and now that we are bringing the Protestant churches and the world into harmony with this right arm of our strength, we will finally have a law to exterminate all who will not submit to our authority.  When death shall be made the penalty of violating our Sabbath, then many who are now ranked with commandment-keepers will come over to our side.
"But before proceeding to these extreme measures, we must exert all our wisdom and subtlety to deceive and ensnare those who honor the true Sabbath.  We can separate many from Christ by worldliness, lust, and pride.  They may think themselves safe because they believe the truth, but indulgence of appetite or the lower passions, which will confuse judgment and destroy discrimination, will cause their fall.
"Go, make the possessors of lands and money drunk with the cares of this life.  Present the world before them in its most attractive light, that they may lay up their treasure here, and fix their affections upon earthly things.  We must do our utmost to prevent those who labor in God's cause from obtaining means to use against us.  Keep the money in our own ranks.  The more means they obtain, the more they will injure our kingdom by taking from us our subjects.  Make them care more for money than for the upbuilding of Christ's kingdom and the spread of the truths we hate, and we need not fear their influence; for we know that every selfish, covetous person will fall under our power, and will finally be separated from God's people.
"Through those that have a form of godliness but know not the power, we can gain many who would otherwise do us great harm.  Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God will be our most effective helpers.  Those of this class who are apt and intelligent will serve as decoys to draw others into our snares.  Many will not fear their influence, because they profess the same faith.  We will thus lead them to conclude that the requirements of Christ are less strict than they once believed, and that by conformity to the world they would exert a greater influence with worldlings.  Thus they will separate from Christ; then they will have no strength to resist our power, and erelong they will be ready to ridicule their former zeal and devotion.
"Until the great decisive blow shall be struck, our efforts against commandment-keepers must be untiring.  We must be present at all their gatherings.  In their large meetings especially our cause will suffer much, and we must exercise great vigilance, and employ all our seductive arts to prevent souls from hearing the truth and becoming impressed by it.
"I will have upon the ground, as my agents, men holding false doctrines mingled with just enough truth to deceive souls.  I will also have unbelieving ones present, who will express doubts in regard to the Lord's messages of warning to his church.  Should the people read and believe these admonitions, we could have little hope of overcoming them.  But if we can divert their attention from these warnings, they will remain ignorant of our power and cunning, and we shall secure them in our ranks at last.  God will not permit His words to be slighted with impunity.  If we can keep souls deceived for a time, God's mercy will be withdrawn, and he will give them up to our full control.
"We must cause distraction and division.  We must destroy their anxiety for their own souls, and lead them to criticize, to judge, and to accuse and condemn one another, and to cherish selfishness and enmity.  For these sins, God banished us from his presence; and all who follow our example will meet a similar fate."

The Signs of the Times, 05-29-01
The lie which Satan told Eve, "Ye shall not surely die," has been sounding through the centuries from generation to generation.  Thus Satan tempted our first parents, and thus he tempts us to-day.  And from age to age men and women have fallen into his snare, notwithstanding that they have before them Adam's disobedience and its results.  To-day men think and act the words of the great deceiver, giving the impression that God does not mean what He says.

The Signs of the Times, 02-24-09 (see also CS 44)
Satan is offering to every soul the kingdoms of this world in return for the carrying out of his will.  This was the great inducement he presented to Christ in the wilderness of temptation.  And so he says to many of Christ's followers, If you will follow my business methods, I will reward you with wealth.  Every Christian is at some time brought to the test which will reveal his weak points of character.  If the temptation is resisted, precious victories are gained.  He must choose whether he will serve Christ or become a follower of the deceiver, and a worshiper of him.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 03-09-86
Again Satan takes him up into an exceeding high mountain, and laying aside his disguised character, presents before him the kingdoms of the world in all their glory and attractiveness.  "All these will I give thee," he says, "if thou wilt fall down and worship me."  He declares that they are his to give; and he presents them as a tempting bribe to the Son of God.  It is then that the indignation of Christ is stirred; and he says, "Get thee hence, Satan."  The tempter then leaves Christ, faint and dying, upon the field of battle, and one of the heavenly angels who are watching the scene is immediately sent to minister unto him.

Mind, Character, and Personality, Volume 1, p 25 (OHC 93)
Satan comes to us with worldly honor, wealth, and the pleasures of life.  These temptations are varied to meet men of every rank and degree, tempting them away from God to serve themselves more than their Creator.  "All these things will I give Thee," said Satan to Christ.  "All these things will I give thee," says Satan to man.  "All this money, this land, all this power and honor and riches will I give thee"; and man is charmed, deceived, and treacherously allured on to his ruin.  If we give ourselves up to worldliness of heart and of life, Satan is satisfied. (Letter 1a, 1872)

Sermons and Talks, p 227
Adam and Eve became sinners because of transgression, and now the Lord has given to the world His only begotten Son.  That He might abolish the law?  That law that Adam transgressed?  Do you read it thus?  I do not.  Well then, what was the matter with Adam?  Adam ventured to transgress one prohibition of God which was the test that God gave to man to try his loyalty and obedience.  There was nothing in the fruit of the tree of knowledge that was dangerous in itself, but the danger was in Adam and Eve listening to Satan and venturing to transgress.  Here was Eve listening to the voice of the tempter.  His words were contradicting the words of God that death was the penalty of transgression.  Satan says, "Ye shall not die."   God says, "If ye eat of it ye shall die."   Whom shall we believe?

The Desire of Ages, p 130
By the one who had revolted in heaven, the kingdoms of this world were offered Christ, to buy His homage to the principles of evil; but He would not be bought; He had come to establish a kingdom of righteousness, and He would not abandon His purpose.  With the same temptation Satan approaches men, and here he has better success than with Christ.  To men he offers the kingdom of this world on condition that they will acknowledge his supremacy.  He requires that they sacrifice integrity, disregard conscience, indulge selfishness.  Christ bids them seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; but Satan walks by their side and says, "Whatever may be true in regard to life eternal, in order to make a success in this world you must serve me.  I hold your welfare in my hands.  I can give you riches, pleasures, honor, and happiness.  Hearken to my counsel.  Do not allow yourselves to be carried away with whimsical notions of honesty or self-sacrifice.  I will prepare the way before you."  Thus multitudes are deceived.  They consent to live for the service of self, and Satan is satisfied.  While he allures them with the hope of worldly dominion, he gains dominion over the soul.  But he offers that which is not his to bestow, and which is soon to be wrested from him.  In return he beguiles them of their title to the inheritance of the sons of God.

Early Writings, p 91 & 265
The fact that Satan claims that one whom he loved so well, and who hated God so perfectly, is now with the holy apostles and angels in glory, should be enough to remove the veil from all minds and discover to them the dark, mysterious works of Satan.  He virtually says to the world and to infidels, "No matter how wicked you are, no matter whether you believe or disbelieve in God or the Bible, live as you please, heaven is your home; for all know that if Thomas Paine is in heaven, and so exalted, they will surely get there."  This is so glaring that all may see if they will.  Satan is now doing, through individuals like Thomas Paine, what he has been trying to do since his fall.  He is, through his power and lying wonders, tearing away the foundation of the Christian's hope and putting out the sun that is to light the narrow way to heaven.  He is making the world believe that the Bible is uninspired, no better than a storybook, while he holds out something to take its place; namely, spiritual manifestations.

Manuscript Releases, Volume Thirteen, p 151-52
Satan would have your soul; shall he have it?  Say, No, never; it is Christ's property.  Satan says, "Curse God and die."  Will you do it?  He curses God for you, that you may repeat his wicked blasphemy.  Will you do it?  No, for Jesus has died; He has purchased your life.  Your soul is His property, and He will take you by the hand; He will draw you away from perdition; He will make you, as John, His beloved disciple, to win the crown of eternal life.  He bids you, through me, His humble servant, "Look and live."  He opens His loving heart to you that you may hide in the cleft of the Rock.  Say not, "There is no hope for me."  Satan triumphs every time you say it.
Let these thoughts be in your heart, "Thou, O Lord, hast created me for Thyself."  He has permitted you to live that you might become acquainted with Jesus and be willing to follow Him. (Letter 85, 1891)

The Youth's Instructor, 12-06-00
The enemy of God and man takes advantage of the weak points in the characters of men and women.  If men are inclined to self-esteem and self- exaltation, he makes a special effort in that direction.  If one is puffed up with vain conceit, Satan says: I will set my agents to work to surround that man with temptations.  I will make him believe that he is of great consequence.  I will work his ruin by extolling him and seconding all his efforts.  Thus I will lead him to trust to himself, and walk in the sparks of the fire of his own kindling.  For a time the world is stirred with an apparently deep interest in the man whom Satan is seeking to deceive and ruin; but when he has separated himself from God, and the object of the enemy is accomplished, the world no longer interests itself in him.  It has led him into difficulties, but it does not lead him out again, and Satan rejoices in the ruin of his soul.

The Desire of Ages, p 119
When Satan and the Son of God first met in conflict, Christ was the commander of the heavenly hosts; and Satan, the leader of revolt in heaven, was cast out.  Now their condition is apparently reversed, and Satan makes the most of his supposed advantage.  One of the most powerful of the angels, he says, has been banished from heaven.  The appearance of Jesus indicates that He is that fallen angel, forsaken by God, and deserted by man.  A divine being would be able to sustain his claim by working a miracle; "if Thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread."  Such an act of creative power, urges the tempter, would be conclusive evidence of divinity.  It would bring the controversy to an end.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 02-13-94
When God moves upon the hearts of men to draw them to Christ, it seems that a compelling power comes over them, and they believe, and give themselves up to the influence of the Spirit of God.  But if they do not maintain the precious victory that God has given; if they permit old practices and habits to revive, and indulge in amusement or worldly luxury; if they neglect prayer, and cease resisting evil, then Satan's temptation are accepted, and they are led to doubt the verity of their former experience.  They find that they are weak in moral power, and Satan declares to them that it is of no use for them to try the experiment of living a Christian life.  He says, "The experience you thought was of God was only the result of undue emotion and impulse."  As soon as the human agent entertains these suggestions of the evil one, they begin to appear plausible, and then those who ought to know better, who have had a longer experience in the work of God, second the suggestions of Satan, and the Holy Spirit is grieved from the soul.  There are those who almost imperceptibly come to take this position, who will immediately recover themselves when they realize what they are doing; but there are others who will continue to resist the Holy Spirit, until resistance appears to them as a virtue.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 09-01-91
Learn the lessons of meekness and lowliness in the school of Christ.  Realize how much he bore for us, and then count it not a mark of God's anger that you have some trials to bear for Jesus.  If you trust God, the trials will always prove a blessing, and your faith will come forth the brighter, the stronger, the purer.  Satan is always trying to press the soul into distrust of God, and therefore we must educate the mind to trust him.  Talk faith and hope when Satan says, as did the wife of Job, "Curse God, and die."  If you trust God, you will see more reason to trust him.  As you talk of his goodness, you will see more of his love to talk about.  Thus the mind may be trained to live in the brightness of the Sun of righteousness, and not in the shadow which Satan casts athwart our path.  Hope in God, who is the health of our countenance, and our God.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 09-23-90 (CS 214)
It is alarming that so many are deluded by Satan.  He excites the imagination with brilliant prospects of worldly gain, and men become infatuated, and think that before them is a prospect of perfect happiness.  They are lured on by the hope of obtaining honor and riches and position.  Satan says to the soul, "All this will I give thee, all this power and wealth with which you may do good to your fellow-men;" but when the object for which they seek is gained, they find themselves with no connection with the self-denying Redeemer; they are not partakers of the divine nature.  They hold to earthly treasures, and despise the requirements of self-denial, self-sacrifice, and humiliation for the truth's sake.  They have no desire to part with the dear earthly treasure upon which their heart is set.  They have exchanged masters, and accepted the service of mammon instead of the service of Christ.  Satan has secured to himself the worship of these deceived souls through the love of worldly treasure.

Supplement to the Christian Experience and Views of Ellen G.  White, p 42 (EW 121)
Said the angel, "Ye have been picking at straws," (dwelling upon little trials,) and sinners must be lost.  I saw that God was willing to work for us in our meetings, and it was his pleasure to work.  Satan says, "I will hinder the work."  His agents say, Amen.  Professed believers in the truth dwell upon their petty trials and difficulties which satan has magnified before them.  Time that can never be recalled is wasted.  The enemies of the truth have seen our weakness, God has been grieved, Christ wounded.  Satan's object is accomplished, his plans have succeeded, and he triumphs!

Mind, Character, and Personality, Volume 2, p 686-87 (OHC 153)
When Satan is permitted to mold the will, he uses it to accomplish his ends....He stirs up the evil propensities, awakening unholy passions and ambitions.  He says, "All this power, these honors and riches and sinful pleasures, will I give thee"; but his conditions are that integrity shall be yielded, conscience blunted.  Thus he degrades the human faculties and brings them into captivity to sin.--RH, Aug 25, 1896.

Mind, Character, and Personality, Volume 1, p 33 (IHP 116, RH 09-15-96)
Satan will come to you saying, You are a sinner.  But do not let him fill your mind with the thought that because you are sinful, God has cast you off.  Say to him, Yes, I am a sinner, and for that reason I need a Saviour.  I need forgiveness and pardon, and Christ says that if I come to Him I shall not perish.  In His letter to me I read, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).  I will believe the word He has left for me.  I will obey His commands.  When Satan tells you that you are lost, answer, Yes, but Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost.  The greater my sin, the greater my need of a Saviour. (Letter 98b, 1896)

The Great Controversy, p 556-57
If there were no other evidence of the real character of spiritualism, it should be enough for the Christian that the spirits make no difference between righteousness and sin, between the noblest and purest of the apostles of Christ and the most corrupt of the servants of Satan.  By representing the basest of men as in heaven, and highly exalted there, Satan says to the world: "No matter how wicked you are; no matter whether you believe or disbelieve God and the Bible.  Live as you please; heaven is your home."  The spiritualist teachers virtually declare: "Everyone that doeth evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and He delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?" Malachi 2:17.  Saith the word of God: "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness." Isaiah 5:20.

Loma Linda Messages, p 540
Our dear Saviour says again, "I am the true vine and ye are the branches and my Father is the husbandman.  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit He taketh away; and every branch that beareth not fruit he taketh it away."  Now we want to know what fruit we are bearing.  We want our fruits shall be right before the world in the ministry of Christ on the earth, and they can be if we will.  We have all these advantages and how thankful we should be.  The Lord brought this place right into our hands.   What advantages we have in this very place!  But there are other places where they need help, and let every one who can, take his Bible in his hand and see what missionary work he can do; carry with him some of the little books that we have published, and if the people do not want to buy, leave the books with them, and tell them to read them whether they want to buy or not; and if any of you want to give some away, just do that.  There is a chance to let our light shine and we want to do so.  Now Satan has the advantage in many things.  He can quote those glories that he had in the heavenly sanctuary just as though they belonged to him, and he will quote these things.  He is working upon human minds and he will bring in all (896) the sophistries that he can bring in, and mix it in with some of his wonderful learning and agency that he had in the heavenly courts.  The world will certainly think that he is excellent.  We want all that excellency and power, but we shall have the light of truth which is to shine.  But Satan will present that light that he had in the heavenly courts, and many will think that it must be the truth, and they are intelligent men and good women, and he leads them right along to perdition.

Manuscript Releases, Volume Eighteen, p 130
The tempter presents matters in such a very seducing way that men love the presentation.  Satan says, as he did to Adam and Eve, "Ye shall be as gods," and the poor souls come under Satan's mesmeric influence, and they are among the number of those who depart from the faith and begin to weave them beautiful allurements to charm the senses.  They love and adore nature, talk science, and all is a fine gossamer picture, pleasing to the fancy of the worldly but an abomination in the sight of the Lord.  Each heart has its own idol unless that heart is cleansed.  It loves, adores, and worships the beautiful theories spun, but there is death in these things.

Special Testimony for Ministers and Workers-- No. 11, p 7 (TM 409)
Unsanctified ministers are arraying themselves against God.  They are praising Christ and the god of this world in the same breath.  While professedly they receive Christ, they embrace Barabbas, and by their actions say, "Not this man, but Barabbas."  Let all who read these lines, take heed.  Satan has made his boast of what he can do.  He thinks to dissolve the unity which Christ prayed might exist in his church.  He says, "I will go forth and be a lying spirit to deceive those that I can, to criticize, and condemn, and falsify."  Let the son of deceit and false witness be entertained by a church that has had great light, great evidence, and that church will discard the message the Lord has sent, and receive the most unreasonable assertions and false suppositions and false theories.  Satan laughs at their folly; for he knows what truth is.

Testimonies for the Church, Volume Four, p 37
I was shown that Brother B has not a high sense of the perfection of character necessary to a Christian.  He has not a proper sense of his duty to his fellow men.  He is in danger of advancing his own interests, if an opportunity presents, irrespective of his neighbor's advantage or loss.  He regards his own prosperity as exceedingly important, but is not interested in the fortunes or misfortunes of his neighbors, as a follower of Christ should be.  For a trifling advantage to himself, Satan can allure him from his integrity.  This darkens his own soul and brings darkness upon the church.  "All this," says Satan, "shall be yours, if you will depart from strict integrity.  All this will I give you if you will only please me in this, or do and say that."  And too often has Brother B been deceived by the adversary to his own hurt and the darkening of other minds.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 06-23-96
Standing as man's representative at Pilate's bar, he suffered the cruel sentence of death to be passed upon him by unreasonable and wicked men, and answered not a word to their accusations.  The Majesty of heaven was brought as a lamb to the slaughter; and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.  When the poor sinner inquired the way of life, Jesus did not remain silent; but when condemned to the most ignominious and cruel of deaths, he had not a word to say.  He was not silent because he was guilty; for he was the embodiment of purity and holiness.  He could have delivered himself from those who came to take him in the garden of Gethsemane.  A few words from his lips sent the murderous throng reeling to the earth, as if smitten by a bolt of the wrath of God.  But he suffered humiliation, agony, and death in silence, because he had given his life for the life of the world.  He was not compelled to do it, but he volunteered to be man's substitute and surety, and "the Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all."  The wages of sin is death, and he freely offered himself as a propitiation for the sins of men.  We have every reason to hope in his mercy, to believe in his love.  You have every reason to believe that he can and will save you.  Why?  Because you are guiltless?--No; because you are a sinner, and Jesus says, "I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."  The call is addressed to you, and when Satan says to you that there is no hope, tell him you know there is; "for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions of the Seventh-day Adventists, p 141
I want to say to those who have been desponding, When Satan comes in to tempt you, and you have no evidence that the Lord accepts you, do not look to see how dark you are, but look up to the light.  Begin to praise God for the plan of salvation, and hold every victory gained through Christ.  As you repeat the confidence you have in Jesus, Satan will flee; for he cannot bear the name of Jesus.  Thus, step by step, you can fight the fight of faith.  Remember that Jesus has borne long with you, and he does not want you to be lost.  He says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.  If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."  By this he shows that he wants to take possession of your hearts.

Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions of the Seventh-day Adventists, p 141-42 (ST 10-06-87)
Satan may tell you that you cannot be blessed; but Jesus says that he will come in, if you will open the door of your hearts.  Which will you believe?  Here is another precious promise that all may claim.  It is not addressed to those who are perfect, but to sinners; to those who have wandered away from Christ.  "Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon."  Is there one here who dares not claim this promise?  Is there one who will say, "I am so sinful that this does not mean me"?  Put away such thoughts.  Christ will accept you, polluted by sin though you may be, if you will come to him with contrition of soul.  He invites all to come into the light of his presence.  Then why should you remain away?  We want these doubting ones to go from this meeting strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.

Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions of the Seventh-day Adventists, p 154 (RH 11-19-08)
Ever since his fall, it has been the work of Satan to oppose Christ's efforts to redeem the race.  In the Bible he is called an accuser of the brethren.  It is said that he accuses them before God day and night.  Every time he leads them into temptation, he rejoices; because he well knows that their power of resistance will thus become weakened, and that he can then the more easily lead them to commit other sins.  And when they have taken step after step in the wrong direction, he turns and begins to accuse them of the very sins which he has led them to commit.  He thus causes them to become discouraged, and to lose confidence in themselves and in the Lord; and after they have separated from God, dishonored his name, and broken his law, he claims them as his captives, and contests the right of Christ to take them from him.  Pointing to their sins, as he did to the filthy garments of Joshua, he says: "They profess to be thy children; but they do not obey thee.  See the traces of sin upon them.  They are my property."
This is the argument that he employs concerning God's people in all ages.  He pleads their sinfulness as the reason why Christ's restraining power should not hold him back from exercising his cruelty upon them to its fullest extent.  But to the accuser of his people the Saviour says, "The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan.  Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?  Have I not thrust my own hand into the fire to gather this brand from the burning?"

1893 Gospel Workers, p 439-40
Some are in great peril through self-esteem.  If they have a measure of success, Satan suggests to them that they are men of talent; and there are men and women professing godliness who help him in his work by repeating his suggestion.  The man who is praised for his ability learns to rely on his own understanding, and does not feel his need of help from above.  Selfishness becomes a ruling principle with him, his soul is spotted and marred by self-exaltation, and the weakness of his character is made manifest.  The Lord leaves such persons to go on in their self-sufficiency, to work without his grace and special help; and they congratulate themselves that they have his blessing, when they are walking in the sparks of their own kindling.  All this labor is a positive injury; for it blocks the way against the efficient labor of devoted men.  These persons need humble, pure religion, which is not tainted with self-exaltation.  Jesus says to them, as he said to Peter, "When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren." [1 LUKE 22:32.]

Australasian Record, 04-15-12
Says the deceiver: "We must exert all our wisdom and subtlety to deceive and ensnare those who honour the true Sabbath.  We can separate many from Christ by worldliness, lust, and pride.  They may think themselves safe because they believe the truth, but indulgence of appetite and the lower passions, which confuse judgment and destroy discrimination, will cause them to fall.
"Through those who have a form of godliness, but know not the power, we may gain many.  Those who are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God will be our most effective helpers.  Those of this class who are apt and intelligent will draw others into their snares.  Many will not fear their influence, because they profess the same faith.  We will lead them to conclude that the requirements of God are less strict than they once believed, and that by conforming to the world they will exert a greater influence with worldlings.  Thus they will separate from Christ.  Then they will have no strength to resist our power; and ere long they will be ready to ridicule their former zeal and devotion.
"We must cause distraction and division.  We must destroy their anxiety for their own souls, and lead them to criticize, to judge and accuse and condemn one another, and to cherish selfishness and enmity.  For these sins God banished us from His presence, and all who follow our example will meet a similar fate.
"Go, make the possessors of lands and money drunk with the cares of this life.  Present the world before them in its most attractive light, that they may lay up their treasure here, and fix their affections on earthly things.  We must do our utmost to prevent those who labour in God's cause from obtaining means to use against us.  Keep the money in our own ranks.  The more means they obtain, the more they will injure our kingdom by taking from us our subjects.  Make them care more for money than for the building up of Christ's kingdom and the spread of the truths we hate, and we need not fear their influence; for we know that every selfish, covetous person will fall under our  power, and will be separated finally from God's people."
So subtle and untiring are the efforts of the enemy of souls, that God's people need to be very watchful, and to labor earnestly and unceasingly to counterwork evil in the church and in the world.  Satan and his agencies are laying out special lines of labour for those who are controlled by his power.  Deceptions of every kind and degree are arising, so that if possible he would deceive the very elect.  With the same subtle power that he plotted for the rebellion of holy beings in heaven before the fall, Satan is working today to operate through human beings for the fulfillment of his purposes of evil.

Brother A_____, you must cast away your fears.  Leave consequences with the Lord and let go.  You try too hard to save yourself, to do some great thing yourself which will commend you to God.  All God requires of you, dear brother, is entire submission of yourself to Him with all the consequences that your acceptance of the whole truth involves.  Satan says, "What if it is error after all.  Can you afford to run the risk?" Jesus loves you, and if you will consecrate yourself and all that you have to Him, He will accept you and will be your Burden-bearer, your never-failing Friend.

The General Conference Bulletin, 10-01-96
If it is possible, Satan will cause that the professors of religion shall be borne off on some tangent of fanaticism, that they may take extreme positions, and bring reproach on the cause of the Master; and then how he exults; for he can present to the world the inconsistency of those who claim to be led by Christ, and charge their wild and inconsistent positions and measures upon the truth which they believe.  "Here," says the enemy, "is what results from believing the doctrines of Seventh-day Adventists.  See their inconsistency!" The soul needs to be guarded by the strongest fortifications.  The knowledge of the Scriptures must preserve the soul in its balance, by supplying the mind with solid principles of faith and truth.

The Upward Look, p 314
Trust yourself in the hands of God.  Do cease complaining, even though you suppose that there is something to complain of.  Satan says, "I will harass him until he shall make shipwreck of faith"; but you need not be overcome by his devices.  God will uphold you if you will only let Him.  At times you are inclined to make a complete surrender of yourself to God, and then you feel at rest; but you take yourself back again, you do not let Jesus carry your burdens.

The General Conference Bulletin, 04-25-01
When a student has erred, think of how you wish God to deal with you when you err, and how you wish your brethren to treat you when you have done wrong.  Deal with the student accordingly.  By harsh words, or by taking pains to make his deficiency known to every one else, you may turn his head from you, and drive him from Jesus Christ.  If a student acknowledges his fault, the teacher has no right to make that fault known to a single soul.  God does not want wrong to be magnified and the enemy glorified.  When you proclaim a wrong, Satan says, That is just as I want it to be, just as I would have it.

Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 05-26-85
Dear brethren and sisters, do not flatter yourselves that all obstacles to your worldly prosperity would be removed, were you to yield unpopular truth.  Satan tells you this; it is his sophistry.  But if the blessing of God rests upon you, you will prosper; if you turn from him, he will turn from you.  Jesus knows all your wants, and he has left exceeding broad and precious promises.  He says: "There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake and the gospel's, but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions, and in the world to come eternal life."  "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."  "Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 03-19-89
The precious Bible is the garden of God, and his promises are the lilies, and the roses, and the pinks.  Why do you not gather the fragrant flowers, and leave the thistles alone?  Why do you not dwell on the love of Jesus?  Why do you not bring gratitude into your life for all the benefits you have received from your Heavenly Father?  The more thankfulness you express, the more you will have to express.  The whole universe is looking upon us; and see what efforts God has made for our salvation.  He has given his only begotten Son to die for us.  He was willing to come to our world, to leave the royal throne, that he might save the fallen race of men.  Says the prophet, "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted.  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."  He made an infinite sacrifice on Calvary's cross for us.  Then why is it that we are always talking of our bruises?  Why are we not healed?  He died to pardon our sins, and to become our righteousness.  When Satan comes to tell you that you are sinner, tell him that you know you are, but that Christ came into the world to save sinners, and that makes him your Saviour.  I love him; I believe in him to-day.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 03-26-89
Why should we not think of the glorious things that God has promised to his children?  You should not keep your mind fastened on the gloom of the grave.  You should not mourn that God does not love you.  It is Satan that puts these desponding thoughts into your mind.  Jesus loves you.  I have tested the love of God for many years.  I know it is rich and free.  He has suffered trials and afflictions to come upon me to draw me nearer to him.  He has said, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you."  This is the work we should do at this present time.  We should be more in earnest, and by living faith we should claim the promises of God.  There is such a thing as proving God.  Says the prophet, "Will a man rob God?  Yet ye have robbed me.  But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee?  In tithes and offerings.  Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.  Bring ye all the tithes into the store-house, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 05-19-91 (02-27-13)
Home religion is greatly needed, and our words in the home should be of a right character, or our testimonies in church will amount to nothing.  Unless you manifest meekness, kindness, courtesy, in your home, your religion will be in vain.  If there was more genuine home religion, there would be more power in the church.  We may have a great deal more faith than we now have, by living up to the light God has given.  Says the apostle, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."  As you would believe in a friend, so you are to trust God.  If your friend has never denied your requests, you will not doubt his promise to favor you in some new desire.  You are to believe that Jesus knows just what you need, and will supply all your wants; so you can go on in faith, saying "I have laid my burden upon the Lord, and I will not lay it upon any human being.  God will hear and answer my prayers."  Satan may say, "You do not feel any better, you are just as miserable as ever."  But tell him you believe that God will do just as he said, and rest your whole weight on his promise.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 12-06-92
The influence of these messages has been deepening and widening, setting in motion the springs of action in thousands of hearts, bringing into existence institutions of learning, publishing houses, and health institutions; all these are the instrumentalities of God to co-operate in the grand work represented by the first, second, third angels flying in the midst of heaven to warn the inhabitants of the world that Christ is coming again with power and great glory.  The prophet says, "I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power: and the earth was lightened with glory.  And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils."  This is the same messages that was given by the second angel.  Babylon is fallen, "because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication."  What is that wine?  --Her false doctrines.  She has given to the world a false Sabbath instead of the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and has repeated the falsehood that Satan first told to Eve in Eden,--the natural immortality of the soul.  Many kindred errors she has spread far and wide, "teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 07-25-93
The office of a messenger whom God has chosen to send with reproofs and warnings, is strangely misunderstood at the present time.  When reproof is given, the church-members feel humiliated, as their real situation is revealed to them, which they were not able to discern.  God in mercy sent them warnings and reproof because he loved them.  He says, "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore and repent."  Those who need reproof bring sorrow and grief upon the soul of him who must correct their errors; but though his message be painful to him, he dare not neglect his work.  Those who deserve reproofs feel hurt under personal admonition.  Pride is wounded, and Satan suggests that their mistakes and errors will be reported to others, and remarks will be made in reference to their mistaken course of action.  It would be well for these individuals to realize that their defects are manifest to all, and the world measures them by that which they do.  Not only this world beholds their course, but they are a spectacle to the angels of heaven.  The heavenly host are looking upon every man, woman, and child, and they see the defects of their characters.  Besides this, nothing is hid from God; our secret sins are in the light of his countenance.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 08-25-96
It is Satan's work to dethrone God from the heart, and to mold human nature into his own image of moral deformity.  He stirs up the evil propensities, awakening unholy passions and ambitions.  He says, "All this power, these honors, and riches, and sinful pleasures, will I give thee;" but his conditions are that integrity shall be yielded, conscience blunted.  Thus he degrades the human faculties, and brings them into captivity to sin.

Testimonies for the Church, Volume Five, p 632
We should beware that we do not give place to doubt and unbelief, and in our attitude of despair complain of God and misrepresent Him to the world.  This is placing ourselves on Satan's side of the question.  "Poor souls," he says, "I pity you, mourning under sin; but God has no pity.  You long for some ray of hope; but God leaves you to perish, and finds satisfaction in your misery."  This is a terrible deception.  Do not give ear to the tempter, but say: "Jesus has died that I might live.  He loves me, and wills not that I should perish.  I have a compassionate heavenly Father; and although I have abused His love, though the blessings He has graciously given me have been squandered, I will arise, and go to my Father, and say: 'I have sinned...and am no more worthy to be called Thy son: make me as one of Thy hired servants."' The parable tells you how the wanderer will be received.  " When he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him."  Thus the Bible represents God's willingness to receive the repentant, returning sinner.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 07-22-09
In the wilderness of temptation Satan came to Christ as an angel from the courts of God.  It was by his words, not by his appearance, that the Saviour recognized the enemy.  The record states: "Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.  And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered.  And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread."

Testimonies for the Church, Volume Five, p 473-74 (RH 01-09-08)
Satan urges before God his accusations against them, declaring that they have by their sins forfeited the divine protection, and claiming the right to destroy them as transgressors.  He pronounces them just as deserving as himself of exclusion from the favor of God.  "Are these," he says, "the people who are to take my place in heaven and the place of the angels who united with me?  While they profess to obey the law of God, have they kept its precepts?  Have they not been lovers of self more than of God?  Have they not placed their own interests above His service?  Have they not loved the things of the world?  Look at the sins which have marked their lives.  Behold their selfishness, their malice, their hatred toward one another."

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 01-19-11
Satan declared that there is no forgiveness with God; that if God should forgive sin, he would make his law of no effect.  He says to the sinner, You are lost.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 11-20-13 (PK 183-84, Mar 162, LHU 141)
During the Christian dispensation the great enemy of man's happiness has made the Sabbath of the fourth commandment an object of special attack.  Satan says: "I will work at cross purposes with God.  I will empower my followers to set aside God's memorial, the seventh-day Sabbath.  Thus I will show the world that the day sanctified and blessed by God has been changed.  That day shall not live in the minds of the people.  I will obliterate the memory of it.  I will place in its stead a day that does not bear the credentials of God, a day that cannot be a sign between God and his people.  I will lead those who accept this day to place upon it the sanctity that God placed upon the seventh day.

The Great Controversy, p 561-62
Satan has long been preparing for his final effort to deceive the world.  The foundation of his work was laid by the assurance given to Eve in Eden: "Ye shall not surely die."  "In the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."  Genesis 3:4, 5.  Little by little he has prepared the way for his masterpiece of deception in the development of spiritualism.  He has not yet reached the full accomplishment of his designs; but it will be reached in the last remnant of time.  Says the prophet: "I saw three unclean spirits like frogs...they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty."  Revelation 16:13, 14.  Except those who are kept by the power of God, through faith in His word, the whole world will be swept into the ranks of this delusion.  The people are fast being lulled to a fatal security, to be awakened only by the outpouring of the wrath of God.

The Signs of the Times, 12-15-81
There are many who teach that man may violate God's law with impunity.  These men seek to conceal the hideous character of sin, by clothing it with garments of righteousness.  They may observe all the forms of religion, but their hearts are at enmity with God.  They look upon his law as a yoke of bondage, because it forbids them to indulge their sinful desires.  "Thou shalt not," placed at every avenue of sin, is the restriction of the just and holy One.  Those who, like Hophni and Phinehas, disregard the commandments of God, and lead others to transgress, are Satan's agents to destroy souls.  They say to the sinner, "It shall be well with thee," when God says, "I will punish the transgressor with my wrath, I will take him away in my hot displeasure."

The Signs of the Times, 08-07-84
The idea that prayer is not essential is one of Satan's most successful devices to ruin souls.  Prayer is addressing the mind to God, the Fountain of wisdom, the Source of strength and peace and happiness.  Prayer includes acknowledgment of the divine perfections, gratitude for mercies received, penitential confession of sins, and earnest entreaty for the blessing of God, both for ourselves and for others.  Jesus prayed to the Father with strong crying and tears.  Paul exhorts believers to "pray without ceasing."  "In everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God."  "Pray one for another," says James.  "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."  God has a right to command our devotions; his authority is sacred and unquestionable.  We are under obligation to pray because he requires it; and in obeying his requirements we shall receive a gracious and precious reward.

The Signs of the Times, 07-21-87
We must not trust the claims of men.  They may, as Christ represents, profess to work miracles in healing the sick.  Is this marvelous, when just behind them stands the great deceiver, the miracle-worker who will yet bring down fire from heaven in the sight of men?  Nor can we trust impressions.  The voice or spirit that says to a man.  You are under no obligation to obey the law of God; you are holy and sinless, while he is trampling on the divine law, is not the voice of Jesus; for he declares: "I have kept my Father's commandments."  And John testifies: "He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."  Then how can these manifestations of great power, and these wonderful impressions, be accounted for, except on the ground that they are given through the influence of that miracle-working spirit that has gone forth to deceive the whole world, and infatuate them with strong delusion that they shall believe a lie?   He is pleased when men and women claim to possess great spiritual power, and yet disregard the law of God, because through their disobedience they mislead others, and he can use them as effective agents in his work.

The Signs of the Times, 08-18-87
Satan will tell you that you do not feel any better than you did before you went to Jesus with your troubles.  But here the question arises again, What has feeling to do with it?  The Lord says: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you."  Again we read: "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will" grudgingly pardon.  Is that it?  No, indeed!  This is the way it reads: "For he will abundantly pardon."  When you have thrown yourself upon the mercy of God, and taken him at his word, and yet the enemy comes, and suggests your faults and failings, and tells you that you are no better than before you sought the Lord, you can point to Jesus, and repeat his promises, and tell what he has done for you.

The Signs of the Times, 09-30-89
How long we have resisted the pleading of the Spirit of God!  How long he has borne with us!  We would not bear such resistance as we have made against him.  But he says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways."  "As the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him."  It is because the Lord is not like one of us that he can forgive sins when we come to him with repentance.  Satan tries to discourage every soul that seeks to come to God.  He will tell you that you are a sinner, unworthy of the love of God.  And you can tell him that you know it, but that you have repented of your transgressions and by faith you depend upon the merits of the blood of Christ, and the mercy of God is for you.  Reach over the doubts that he suggests to your mind, and grasp the promise of God.  Tell your enemy that "the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."

The Signs of the Times, 06-11-94
Light is shining amid the moral darkness in this age of the world.  The Holy Spirit is working on the hearts of men to convince them of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment to come.  But those who refuse the light, and accept the excuses that Satan may frame as reasons why they should not obey the truth, will manifest Satanic enmity against those who obey God rather than man.  Those who steadfastly follow the practice and customs of the world in the very face of light and truth, will obstinately oppose the commandments of God, and render unswerving loyalty to him who first rebelled against God, and was expelled from the courts of heaven; but in the face of the enmity of the world, those who truly believe in Christ will take him for their example in all things.  Jesus says, "I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love."  The beloved disciple said: "He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected; hereby know we that we are in him.  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself so to walk, even as he walked.  Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning."

Temperance, p 103
Shall those who have had more opportunities and much precious light, who enjoy the advantages of education, make the plea that they cannot cut away from unhealthful practices?  Why do not those who have excellent reasoning powers reason from cause to effect?  Why do they not advocate reform by planting their feet firmly on principle, determined not to taste alcoholic drink or to use tobacco?  These are poisons, and their use is a violation of God's law.  Some say, when an effort is made to enlighten them on this point, I will leave off by degrees.  But Satan laughs at all such decisions.  He says, They are secure in my power.  I have no fear of them on that ground.

The Signs of the Times, 05-07-96
We desire to be Christians, then let us sit at the feet of Jesus and learn of him.  He will give us strength to overcome every defect in our character, and to oppose to these hereditary or cultivated defects the virtues of Jesus Christ.  We must push our way through the deceptive darkness to the divine light.  Jesus says, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."  Discouragement and gloom come upon us not because the truth is not sufficient for us, but because we do not bring it into our hearts, and let it have a controlling influence over our lives and actions.  Jesus has loved us with a love surpassing that of a mother for her child.  The question has been asked, "Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?" And the answer is given: "Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.  Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands."  By the hand of faith let us grasp the promises of God, and be upon vantage ground.  Then we shall be where Satan can not come near and say, "God can not help you.  You have sinned, and you can not claim the promises."  The adversary would have us think that the way to life is so difficult that it will be impossible to reach the bliss of heaven.  But God has placed us in circumstances where the very best of our natures may be developed, and where the highest faculties may be exercised.  If we cultivate that which is good, the objectionable tendencies will not gain the supremacy, and at last we shall be accounted worthy to join the family above.  But if we desire to be saints above, we must first be saints upon the earth.

Spiritual Gifts, Volume 3, p 41-42
It was not the will of God that this sinless pair should have any knowledge of evil.  He had freely given them the good, but withheld the evil.  Eve thought the words of the serpent wise, and she received the broad assertion, "Ye shall not surely die; for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods knowing good and evil"--making God a liar.  Satan boldly insinuates that God had deceived them to keep them from being exalted in knowledge equal with himself.  God said, If ye eat "ye shall surely die."  The serpent says, If ye eat "ye shall not surely die."  She ate, and was delighted with the fruit.  It seemed delicious to her taste, and she imagined that she realized in herself the wonderful effects of the fruit.  She took the fruit and found her husband and related to him the words spoken by the serpent, and told him that by eating the fruit she had felt, instead of death, a pleasing influence.  As soon as Eve had disobeyed, she became a powerful medium through which to occasion the fall of her husband.

The Signs of the Times, 04-17-01 (04-12-05)
Satan comes to men and women with his specious temptations.  Offering them riches and power, he says, "All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me."  And thousands upon thousands listen to his words, and worship him by becoming wholly engrossed in a search for wealth or in following the fashions of this degenerate age.  Thus the world is being led captive.  The beings whom God created in His own image are entirely neglecting to prepare for the Judgment.

The Signs of the Times, 06-18-02
Do not entertain the thought that because you have made mistakes, because your life has been darkened by errors, your Heavenly Father does not love you and will not hear you when you pray.  He says, "Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out."  "The Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy."  His heart of love is touched by our sorrows, and even by our utterance of them.  Take to Him everything that perplexes the mind.  Nothing is too great for Him to bear; for He holds up worlds, He rules over the affairs of the universe.  Nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for Him to notice.  There is no chapter in our experience too dark for Him to read; there is no perplexity too difficult for Him to unravel.  None have fallen so low, none are so vile, that they can not find deliverance in Christ.  The demoniacs of Gadara, in the place of prayer could utter only the words of Satan; but yet the heart's unspoken appeal was heard.  No cry from a soul in need is unheeded.

The Signs of the Times, 12-03-02
"If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread."  Here is the insinuation of distrust.  In the tones of the tempter's voice is an expression of utter incredulity.  Would God treat His own Son thus?  Would He leave Him in the desert with wild beasts, without food, without companions, without comfort?  Satan insinuated that God never meant His Son to be in such a state as this.  "If Thou be the Son of God," he says, "show Thy power by relieving Thyself of this pressing hunger.  Command that this stone be made bread."

The Youth's Instructor, 11-01-57
Look to the rock that is higher than you, plead with God in secret prayer for grace.  All these "natural" infirmities can be overcome by grace.  But the "natural," carnal, heart is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be.  If the carnal mind is subdued, your will not hear so frequently, "It's natural."  Satan loves to hear this.  His angels rejoice that you have not grace sufficient to overcome "natural" infirmities.  They triumph at these words, "It's natural."   But Jesus says, "my grace is sufficient for you."   Yes it is sufficient to overcome and subdue the "natural," carnal, heart.

The Youth's Instructor, 08-31-87
The power of an angel could not make an atonement for our sins.  The angelic nature united to the human could not be as costly, as elevated, as the law of God.  It was the Son of God alone who could present an acceptable sacrifice.  God himself became man, and bore all the wrath that sin had provoked.  This problem, How could God be just and yet the justifier of sinners?  baffled all finite intelligence.  A divine person alone could mediate between God and man.  Human redemption is a theme which may well tax the faculties of the mind to the utmost.  The reason that Christianity is not more elevated is because there is so little effort put forth in the great, grand, holy work of struggling for immorality.  Satan is constantly trying to make the salvation of the soul an indifferent matter,--that man has but little to do to secure this priceless treasure.  This is why eternal things are not discerned; this is why there is a cheap, spurious article passed off as religion.  There are many who say, "I am saved; I am sanctified; I have nothing to do, Jesus has done it all," and they care not to search the Scriptures or to hear the voice of God in his word, or to be doers of the word.  This belief is like a building erected on sliding sand.  It is a refuge of lies, and the storm and tempest sweep it away, and "great," says Christ, "is the fall of it;" because the false hopes were built so high, and the builder felt so perfectly secure.  It was a delusive hope.  Our faith, the hope we claim of one day obtaining immortality, calls for the stretch of every muscle, and the stain of every nerve.  We cannot be saved in sin and in transgression of God's law.  We cannot be saved in indolence and inactivity.  We must search the Scriptures if we would have spiritual enlightenment.  We have to wrestle against pride and against the human passions, which the light of God's word reveals.  Every soul saved will present unwearied petitions for the assistance of Jesus Christ, and will use thankfully and appreciate all the helps which God has provided for them.

The Youth's Instructor, 03-09-93 (FLB 323)
The Lord's hand has been reached out in tenderest compassion and love; but they do not care to trust him.  They want to feel fully able to devise and plan for themselves.  They walk in the sparks of their own kindling, therefore walk in darkness, and have no light.  The Lord's voice is heard, saying, "Follow me."  "He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."  But like Saul, they want their own way.  The Lord marks out a way in which he would have them walk.  He has lent them talents to be used for his glory, to do a certain work for the Master; but Satan says, "I will countermand the order of Christ.  I will find another line of work for active brain and busy hands, whereby they shall serve me.  I will eclipse eternal interests before this youth, and attract his mind by worldly interests and when he is disappointed in one, I will thrust before him other attractions.  I will blind his power to discern, that he may work against the advancement of truth.  I will bind him about with worldly allurements like the finest threads, whose power to bind will become at last like ropes of steel, and he shall be bound in my service.  I can lead him where I choose, and he will not discern that he is in hostility to Jesus Christ, my rival, and disloyal to God."

It is not safe, dear youth, to harbor temptation for one moment.  If you stop to reason how you can evade God's commands, you will surely become entangled in unbelief, and be led to question the plainest utterances of God.  Satan comes to the youth in disguise, as he came to Eve in Eden, and seeks to make them believe that God does not mean just what he says; and, like Eve, they venture to do those things which he has commanded them not to do.  Eve lingered by the tempter, and entered into a controversy with him.  By flattery he gained her attention, and then said, "Hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?...Ye shall not surely die."

Appeal and Suggestions to Conference Officers, p 21-22
What is to be done?  Shall the president of the General Conference carry the burden of the neglects of presidents and ministers, and weep between the porch and the altar, crying, "Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thy heritage to reproach"?  Shall he feel that he is responsible for the deep sleep, the paralysis that is upon the people of God?  If he works as he has done to arouse the careless and set in order the things that others have neglected, he will become unable to labor, and will go down to an untimely grave.  Will the presidents of Conferences and the ministers of the people seek the Lord earnestly, put away their sins, empty their souls of their idols?  or will they continue to go on half-hearted, neglecting solemn duties, while Satan triumphs, whispering to his evil angels, and to his human confederacy in evil, "Hopeless, irredeemable bankruptcy"?  Let there be no more wasted hours, neglected duties, despised privileges.  Open your eyes to what is taking place around you in the signs of the times.  The warnings of God have been given; why not heed them?  Do not abandon yourself to despair, but heed the words of Christ, "Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die."  When the eyesalve is applied, many will see as never before, their life of unfulfilled duties, and will be conscience-stricken.  But the words of the inspired apostle present, now, just now, hope to those who have been lagging behind and now are trembling for the future.  He says, "Redeeming, the time, because the days are evil."  Remember, all depends on the use you make henceforth of your intrusted talents.  If you refuse to use your powers, they will surely become weak, and decay.  God has given to every man his work.

Testimony to the Church, p 5
You, my brother, are in danger of carrying minds beyond their depth.  Those who are best acquainted with Eld. P. have less confidence in him.  They will take what he says, however untrue and unjust, and even ridiculous, and make it bear against the truth, if possible.  But minds that will receive and be pleased with the productions of his pen are not the ones to be convinced of the truth, or that would honor the cause of God if they should accept the Sabbath.  And you are in danger of presenting objections to thousands of minds that they never thought of, and which many will use if they become disaffected.  If you and other men take a position to investigate and show the fallacy and inconsistency of men who dishonestly turn the truth of God into a lie, Satan will stir up men enough to keep your pen and the pens of several others constantly employed, while other branches of the work are left to suffer.

Sermons and Talks, p 153-54 (9MR 76-77)
Satan says to Christ [in the wilderness], "It is certain that the angels shall have charge over You and bear You up in their hands lest at any time You shall dash your foot against a stone."  But what did he leave out of that quotation?  He was to be kept in the way; in all Thy ways.  That was not His way at all.  God's way is Christ's way.  There is a plan of salvation laid for the race that Christ should not work a miracle on His own account to relieve Himself of any of the necessities of humanity and He was kept in all His ways.  The enemy did not quote that at all, but [he did quote that] the angel shall keep Thee lest at any time Thou shalt dash Thy foot against a stone; he was to bear him up.

Sermons and Talks, p 247-48
We must claim His sufficiency.  Christ has died for us.  Satan says, "You are a sinner and cannot make yourself any better."  Yes, I am a sinner, and I need a Saviour, and I lay hold of the merits of Jesus Christ to save me from all transgression.  We wash in the fountain that has been prepared for us, and we are cleansed from all the defilement of sin.

The Ellen G.  White 1888 Materials, p 129
Claiming possession of the world, Satan determined to get possession also of the minds of men.  He comes to them with the advantages offered by the world, and says, "All these shall be yours if you will worship me."  And many, lured on by the prize held out by him, bow at his shrine.

Counsels on Diet and Foods, p 166 (MS 86, 1897)
Some say, when an effort is made to enlighten them on this point [use of liquor and tobacco], I will leave off by degrees.  But Satan laughs at all such decisions.  He says, They are secure in my power.  I have no fear of them on that ground.  But he knows that he has no power over the man who, when sinners entice him, has moral courage to say No squarely and positively.  Such a one has dismissed the companionship of the devil, and as long as he holds to Jesus Christ, he is safe.  He stands where heavenly angels can connect with him, giving him moral power to overcome.

Prophets and Kings, p 588-89
Satan has an accurate knowledge of the sins that he has tempted God's people to commit, and he urges his accusations against them, declaring, that by their sins they have forfeited divine protection, and claiming that he has the right to destroy them.  He pronounces them just as deserving as himself of exclusion from the favor of God.  "Are these," he says, "the people who are to take my place in heaven, and the place of the angels who united with me?  They profess to obey the law of God; but have they kept its precepts?  Have they not been lovers of self more than lovers of God?  Have they not placed their own interests above His service?  Have they not loved the things of the world?  Look at the sins that have marked their lives.  Behold their selfishness, their malice, their hatred of one another.  Will God banish me and my angels from His presence, and yet reward those who have been guilty of the same sins?  Thou canst not do this, O Lord, in justice.  Justice demands that sentence be pronounced against them."
