SATAN UNITING HIS FORCES

The Kress Collection, p 18 (p 103, CH 525)
God's benevolent design embraces every branch of the work.  The law of reciprocal dependence and influence is to be recognized and obeyed.  "None of us liveth to himself."  The enemy has used the chain of dependence to draw men together.  They have united to destroy God's image in man, to counterwork the gospel by perverting its principles.  They are represented in God's word as being bound in bundles to be burned.  Satan is uniting his forces for perdition.  The unity of God's chosen people has been terribly shaken.  God presents a remedy.  This remedy is not one influence among many influences, and on the same level with them: it is an influence above all influences upon the face of the earth, corrective, uplifting, and ennobling.  Those who work for the gospel should be elevated and sanctified: for they are dealing with God's great principles.  Yoked up with Christ, they are laborers together with God.  Thus the Lord desires to bind his followers together, that they may be a power for good, each acting his part, yet all cherishing the sacred principle of dependence on the great Head.

The Signs of the Times, 01-09-79
Good angels wept to hear the words of Satan, and his exulting boasts.  God declared that the rebellious should remain in heaven no longer.  Their high and happy state had been held upon condition of obedience to the law which God had given to govern the high order of intelligences.  But no provision had been made to save those who should venture to transgress his law.  Satan grew bold in his rebellion, and expressed his contempt of the Creator's law.  This Satan could not bear.  He claimed that angels needed no law; but should be left free to follow their own will, which would ever guide them right; that law was a restriction of their liberty, and that to abolish law was one great object of his standing as he did.  The condition of the angels he thought needed improvement.  Not so the mind of God, who had made laws and exalted them equal to himself.  The happiness of the angelic host consisted in their perfect obedience to law.  Each had his special work assigned him; and until Satan rebelled, these had been perfect order and harmony among the angels in heaven.  Then there was war in heaven.  The Son of God, the Prince of heaven, and his loyal angels, engaged in conflict with the arch rebel and those who united with him.  The Son of God and true, loyal angels prevailed; and Satan and his sympathizers were expelled from heaven.  All the heavenly host acknowledged and adored the God of justice.  Not a taint of rebellion was left.  All was again peaceful and harmonious as before.

Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 08-18-85
The third angel's message must go over the land, and awaken the people, and call their attention to the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.  Another angel unites his voice with the third angel, and the earth is lighted with its glory.  The light increases, and it shines out to all the nations of the earth.  It is to go forth as a light that burneth.  It will be attended with great power, until its golden beams have fallen upon every tongue, every people, and every nation upon the face of the whole earth.  Let me ask you, What you are doing to prepare for this work?  Are you building for eternity?  You must remember that this angel represents the people that have this message to give to the world.  Are you among that people?  Do you really believe that this work in which we are engaged is truly the third angel's message?  If so, then you understand that we have a mighty work to do, and that we ought to be about it.  We must sanctify ourselves by a strict obedience to the truth, placing ourselves in right relation to God and his work.  As the truth goes forth, Satan intensifies his zeal to defeat its progress by presenting pleasing delusions.  As we urge the truth, he urges his errors.  He will stir up his agents, in view of the coming of the Lord, to go out and cry, "Lo! here is Christ, and lo! there is Christ.  And here arises this superstition, and there arises that heresy.  And tell me, what are we to do about it?  I will tell you: we can become familiar, with the Bible, and read what saith the Lord.  Not only the ministers but all who love and fear God are to do the Master's work; and that is to let the light that he has given you shine before all.  Here are two companies; one of them is being bound in bundles to burn, the other is being bound by the cords of truth and love.  Satan is binding his followers with the work of iniquity; Christ is binding together his people in love and faith in the keeping of his commandments.  And this work will increase more and more, and Satan will work to divide and separate God's people one from the other.  And while he is doing this kind of work, be careful that none of you are found helping him.  We want to put away our cold-heartedness, and let love, tender compassion, true courtesy, and the spirit of tenderness come into our midst.  Here we are in the waiting time, in the day of God's preparation.  Here in this world we are to fit up for these great trials that are soon coming upon us.  And yet some of us act as though we had a whole millennium before us in which to accomplish the work.  But, says the text, "Watch and pray; for ye know not when the time is."  And what Christ said to his disciples, I say unto you, "Take ye heed, watch and pray," that when the Master comes to reckon with his servants, you may receive from him the crown of life laid up for the overcomer, and rejoice with him in his kingdom.

Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p 274
Go to those supposed to be in error, talk with them, not working with duplicity and hypocrisy, meeting them day by day with apparent friendship, and at the same time plotting against them in perfect unity with the satanic agencies at work to uproot, to tear down, to remove from the institution the ones the unbelieving element wants removed, while not a word is spoken with the brethren or sisters in the faith to redeem them, to heal them, if they are in error; and if they are not in the wrong, to vindicate the right, and put the rebuke where it belongs--upon the plotters of an evil work, because Satan is behind the scene.  The Lord Jesus rebuked the Pharisees, likening them to sepulchers that do not appear, hidden from sight, but full of corruption.  The Lord hates all deception, secrecy, and guile.  This is Satan's work; the work of God is open and frank.  No one will work against a child of God on the strength of the testimony of the Lord's enemy, and work after Satan's manner--concealing himself, yet suggesting, instigating, planning in perfect unity with the Lord's enemies.

The Signs of the Times, 05-08-93
Satan has been the central object of the world's worship; but where stands Satan's seat, the throne of God should have been planted.  Christ purposed that his cross should become the center of attraction, whereby he should draw the hearts of men to himself.  Taking upon him human nature, he became one with the fallen race, and by virtue of the divine nature he laid hold of the throne of the Infinite, and enlisted the cooperation of every heavenly instrumentality to carry out his plan for redeeming a lost race.  He sends down upon the hearts of men the bright beams of his righteousness in order to dispel the shadow which Satan has cast upon the world.  To counteract his work, Satan and his hosts combined their forces with evil men, and sought to overthrow the work of Christ; but heavenly agencies, united in their great Head, advanced to meet the confederacy of evil, and evil and error were in conflict with goodness and truth.

The Signs of the Times, 04-14-98
Satanic agencies confederated with evil men to lead the people to believe that Christ was the chief of sinners, and to make Him an object of detestation.  But the priests and rulers failed to realize that in Christ divinity was enthroned in humanity.  Christ's humanity could not be separated from His divinity.  Could one sin have been found in Christ, the world would have plunged into blackness and ruin.  If Satan could have so bruised Christ's heel that He would have yielded to the physical torture, his triumph would have been complete.  He could have shouted victory.  The world would have been his kingdom.  But Satan could only cause pain.  He could not touch Christ's head unless Christ proved false to God.  Satan and his angels united with the priests and rulers in mocking and deriding the Son of God.  He filled them with vile and loathsome speeches.  He inspired their taunts.  But by all this he gained nothing.  He was permitted to bruise Christ's heel, but Christ was bruising his head.  By working through the priests against Christ, Satan was effecting his own downfall.

The Desire of Ages, p 746
"If Thou be the Son of God," they said, "come down from the cross."  "Let Him save Himself, if He be Christ, the chosen of God."  In the wilderness of temptation Satan had declared, "If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread."  "If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down" from the pinnacle of the temple. [MATT. 4:3,6.]  And Satan with his angels, in human form, was present at the cross.  The archfiend and his hosts were co-operating with the priests and rulers.  The teachers of the people had stimulated the ignorant mob to pronounce judgment against One upon whom many of them had never looked, until urged to bear testimony against Him.  Priests, rulers, Pharisees, and the hardened rabble were confederated together in a Satanic frenzy.  Religious rulers united with Satan and his angels.  They were doing his bidding.

The Upward Look, p 262
Today the same attitude on the part of His people will call forth similar treatment.  Every person will be arrayed under one of the two banners.  The chosen and loyal will stand under the bloodstained banner of Prince Emmanuel, and all others under Satan's standard.  All who are on Satan's side will unite with him in honoring the spurious Sabbath, thus paying homage to the man of sin, who has exalted himself above all that is called God and [who] has thought to change times and laws.  They trample upon the laws of Jehovah and frame laws to compel all to worship the false Sabbath, the idol they have exalted.  But the day of deliverance to God's people is not far distant.

Spiritual Gifts, Volume 4B, p 105 (RH 5-13-62)
The willing subjects of Satan are faithful and active, united in one object.  And although they will hate, and war with, each other, yet they will improve every opportunity to advance their common interest.  But the great Commander in Heaven and earth has limited Satan's power.

The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, p 1508
The two great powers in controversy are working, one from beneath, the other from above.  Every man is under the secret influence of the one or the other, and his acts will reveal the character of the inspiration from which they proceed.  Those who are united with Christ will work always in Christ's lines.  Those who are in union with Satan will work under the inspiration of their leader, opposed to the Holy Spirit's power and action.  The will of man is left free to act, and by action is revealed what spirit is moving upon the heart.  "By their fruits ye shall know them."

The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, p 580-81
I have been shown that love for Christ and for God has well-nigh died out of our churches.  And because we do not love God, we are lacking in love for one another.  A cold, iron-like spirit separates believers from God and from one another.  Some show special attention to a few favorites, who uphold and sustain them.  Men are binding themselves together in unsanctified confederacies.  Their union is displeasing to the Lord.  They have united to carry out plans that are not in harmony with the plans of God.  The Lord can and will break up these selfish confederacies.  They are a snare of Satan, to weaken the cause of present truth, to bring about a condition of things that will separate God's people from Him.

To the Little Remnant Scattered Abroad, 04-06-46
By this time the 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united.  On their foreheads was written, God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious Star containing Jesus' new name.  At our happy, holy state the wicked were enraged, and would rush violently up to lay hands on us to thrust us in prison, when we would stretch forth the hand in the name of the Lord, and the wicked would fall helpless to the ground.  Then it was that the synagogue of Satan knew that God had loved us who could wash one another's feet, and salute the holy brethren with a holy kiss, and they worshipped at our feet.  Soon our eyes were drawn to the East, for a small black cloud had appeared about half as large as a man's hand, which we all knew was the Sign of the Son of Man.  We all in solemn silence gazed on the cloud as it drew nearer, lighter, and brighter, glorious, and still more glorious, till it was a great white cloud.  The bottom appeared like fire, a rainbow was over it, around the cloud were ten thousand angels singing a most lovely song.  And on it sat the Son of Man, on his head were crowns, his hair was white and curly and lay on his shoulders.  His feet had the appearance of fire, in his right hand was a sharp sickle, in his left a silver trumpet.  His eyes were as a flame of fire, which searched his children through and through.  Then all faces gathered paleness, and those that God had rejected gathered blackness.  Then we all cried out, who shall be able to stand?  Is my robe spotless?  Then the angels ceased to sing, and there was sometime of awful silence, when Jesus spoke.  Those who have clean hands and a pure heart shall be able to stand, my grace is sufficient for you.  At this, our faces lighted up, and joy filled every heart.  And the angels struck a note higher and sung again while the cloud drew still nearer the earth.  Then Jesus' silver trumpet sounded, as he descended on the cloud, wrapped in flames of fire.  He gazed on the graves of the sleeping saints, then raised his eyes and hands to heaven and cried out, Awake! Awake! Awake! ye that sleep in the dust, and arise.  Then there was a mighty earthquake.  The graves opened, and the dead came up clothed with immortality.  The 144,000 shouted, Hallelujah! as they recognized their friends who had been torn from them by death, and in the same moment we were changed and caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air.  We all entered the cloud together, and were seven days ascending to the sea of glass, when Jesus brought along the crowns and with his own right hand placed them on our heads.  He gave us harps of gold and palms of victory.  Here on the sea of glass the 144,000 stood in a perfect square.  Some of them had very bright crowns, others not so bright.  Some crowns appeared heavy with stars, while others had but few.  All were perfectly satisfied with their crowns.  And they were all clothed with a glorious white mantle from their shoulders to their feet.  Angels were all about us as we marched over the sea of glass to the gate of the City.  Jesus raised his mighty glorious arm, laid hold of the gate and swung it back on its golden hinges, and said to us, You have washed your robes in my blood, stood stiffly for my truth, enter in.  We all marched in and felt we had a perfect right in the City.  Here we saw the tree of life, and the throne of God.  Out of the throne came a pure river of water, and on either side of the river was the tree of life.  On one side of the river was a trunk of a tree and a trunk on the other side of the river, both of pure transparent gold.

Maranatha, p 196
As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel's message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition.  By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to view matters in nearly the same light; and when the test is brought, they are prepared to choose the easy, popular side.  Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls.  They become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren.  When Sabbathkeepers are brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apostates are the most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them, and by false reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them.

Maranatha, p 296
For six thousand years the great controversy has been in progress; the Son of God and His heavenly messengers have been in conflict with the power of the evil one, to warn, enlighten, and save the children of men.  Now all have made their decisions; the wicked have fully united with Satan in his warfare against God.  The time has come for God to vindicate the authority of His downtrodden law.  Now the controversy is not alone with Satan, but with men.  "The Lord hath a controversy with the nations"; "He will give them that are wicked to the sword."

The Signs of the Times, 07-11-95
This prophecy refers not only to the enmity between Christ and Satan, but also to the enmity that exists between the world and the followers of the world's Redeemer.  Christ was the special one who should bruise the head of the serpent; but the prophecy also includes all those who shall overcome the enemy by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.  In the words addressed to the serpent is a delineation of the great, unended conflict that has been waging in the world from the beginning of sin.  The earth is the battle field for the conflict, and the result of the conflict, while it brings temporal loss upon the followers of Christ, will bring eternal ruin upon Satan, evil angels, and evil men, who unite with the enemy in the controversy against Christ.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 09-12-93 (TM 62, Mar 205)
Fallen angels upon earth form confederations with evil men.  In this age antichrist will appear as the true Christ, and then the law of God will be fully made void in the nations of our world.  Rebellion against God's holy law will be fully ripe.  But the true leader of all this rebellion is Satan clothed as an angel of light.  Men will be deceived and will exalt him to the place of God, and deify him.  But Omnipotence will interpose, and to the apostate churches that unite in the exaltation of Satan, the sentence will go forth, 'Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.'

The Signs of the Times, 11-18-86
The subjects of Satan, although they hate and war with one another, are active and united in the one object of destroying souls.  They are vigilant in improving every opportunity to advance their common interest, and war against the kingdom of Christ.  But He who is the great Commander in Heaven and on earth, has limited their power.

Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p 29 (SD 307)
He who came to redeem the lost world was opposed by the united forces of the adversaries of God and man.  In an unpitying confederacy, evil men and evil angels arrayed themselves against the Prince of Peace.  Though His every word and act breathed of divine compassion, His unlikeness to the world provoked the bitterest hostility.  Because He would give no license for the exercise of the evil passions of our nature, He aroused the fiercest opposition and enmity.  So it is with all who will live godly in Christ Jesus.  Between righteousness and sin, love and hatred, truth and falsehood, there is an irrepressible conflict.  When one presents the love of Christ and the beauty of holiness, he is drawing away the subjects of Satan's kingdom, and the prince of evil is aroused to resist it.  Persecution and reproach await all who are imbued with the Spirit of Christ.  The character of the persecution changes with the times, but the principle--the spirit that underlies it--is the same that has slain the chosen of the Lord ever since the days of Abel.

Our High Calling, p 185
The efficiency of Satan's kingdom is found in the blending together of satanic forces to extend the contagion of evil; but the Lord Jesus has devised a plan whereby He may work counter to the work of Satan.  He designs to imbue His human agents, the subjects of His kingdom, with the principles of love and unity.  With sanctified heart they are to build one another up and strengthen and extend that which is good.  Reciprocating Christ's love, they are to deal in the goods of heaven.  His church is to bear His superscription, and thus testify to the world that God has sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world....Love is to be interwoven as threads of gold in all their actions.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 07-24-94
Jesus has said: "The servant is not greater than his Lord.  If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also."  There will never be any true unity between or with those who stand under the banner of Satan.  The followers of Christ may follow the things that make for peace, they may earnestly desire to overcome the spirit of discord with the spirit of kindness and love, but the enemy will stir up his agents to bring about strife and division.  It is a grave mistake on the part of those who are children of God to seek to bridge the gulf that separates the children of light from the children of darkness by yielding principle, by compromising the truth.  It would be surrendering the peace of Christ in order to make peace or fraternize with the world.  The sacrifice is too costly to be made by the children of God to make peace with the world by giving up the principles of truth.  Those who have the mind of Christ will let that light shine forth to the world in good works, but that light will bring about a division.  Shall the light, therefore, be hid under a bed or under a bushel, because it will mark a distinction between the followers of Christ and the world?  It was the purity of the character of Christ that stirred up the enmity of a profligate world.  His spotless righteousness  was a continual rebuke to their sin and uncleanness; but no principle of truth was compromised by Christ to win the favor of the world.  Then let the followers of Christ settle it in their minds that they will never compromise truth, never yield one iota of principle for the favor of the world.  Let them hold to the peace of Christ.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 08-22-93
Satanic agencies have been moved from beneath, and they have inspired men to unite in a confederacy of evil, that they may perplex, harass, and cause the people of God great distress.  The whole world is to be stirred with enmity against Seventh-day Adventists, because they will not yield homage to the papacy, by honoring Sunday, the institution of this anti-Christian power.  It is the purpose of Satan to cause them to be blotted from the earth, in order that his supremacy of the world may not be disputed.

The Signs of the Times, 10-23-93
The Pharisees see that they are giving publicity to the work that has been done by Jesus, for the multitude is increasing.  They cannot deny the miracle.  What can they say or do to counteract the effect of Jesus' work?  The blind man is filled with joy and gratitude, and beholds the wondrous things of nature, and is filled with intense delight at the beauty of earth and sky.  He freely recites his experience, and though they cannot deceive or mislead him, yet they determine to do the talking, and say, "Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner.?  Do not ever say again that this man gave you sight; God has done it.  The blind man answered and said, "Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not; one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."  Then they questioned again: "what did He to thee? how opened He thine eyes?" With many words they tried to deceive him, and confuse his senses, so that he might think he was deluded.  Satan and his evil angels were on the side of the Pharisees, and united their energies and subtlety with man's reasonings in order to counteract the influence of Christ.  They blunted the convictions that were deepening in many minds; for angels of God were also on the ground to strengthen the blind man who had had his sight restored.

The Signs of the Times, 03-05-96
Again men multiplied upon the earth, and again they took the attitude of rebellion against God.  Loyalty to the law of God was not only condemned, but punished as a crime.  Men made void the law, and naturalized the principles of sin.  Those who did not disregard the law of God were subject to the strongest enmity; for every species of sin was legalized.  Satan boasted before the angels of heaven that he held dominion over the creation of God.  The unity of society was made by enmity to God.  A corrupt harmony existed among men in their aversion to God, which bound them together in one vast army.  The universe of heaven, and the angels of God, were watching for the exhibition of justice, but when the unfallen worlds expected retribution to be administered, mercy prevailed, and the counsel of God was with the Prince of heaven.  He was to unfold the scheme of redemption, to make manifest the plan of salvation.  He who was equal with God, who was great in counsel, mighty in working, was equal to the emergency that had arrived in the government of God.  God sent his Son into the world, not to pass sentence of condemnation upon a rebellious race, but to make manifest his love, and to hold out the hope of eternal life to those who should believe in his Son.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 05-08-88
There was a division among the people concerning the world's Redeemer.  Like sees like.  Like appreciates like, and those who loved truth gave their verdict of the righteousness of Jesus; but wherever evil exists, it leagues with evil for the destruction of the good.  Fallen men and fallen angels, by likeness of purpose and principle, will join in a desperate and determined companionship to resist truth and righteousness.  When Satan can induce men, as he induced angels, to unite with him in rebellion, he has them as his allies and associates in every enterprise formed for the seduction of souls from the principles of truth.  Whatever disunion there may be among themselves on other matters, the wicked are one in their opposition and hatred of the truth.

An Appeal for Self-supporting Laborers to Enter Unworked Fields, p 6 (6T 407)
It is as true now as when Christ was upon earth that every inroad made by the gospel upon the enemy's dominion is met by fierce opposition from his vast armies.  The conflict that is right upon us will be the most terrible ever witnessed.  But though Satan is represented as being as strong as the strong man armed, his overthrow will be complete, and every one who unites with him in choosing apostasy rather than loyalty will perish with him.

The Spirit of Prophecy, Volume Four, p 406
The line of distinction between professing Christians and the ungodly is now hardly distinguishable.  Church-members love what the world loves, and are ready to join with them; and Satan determines to unite them in one body and thus strengthen his cause by sweeping all into the ranks of Spiritualism.  Papists who boast of miracles as a certain mark of the true church, will be readily deceived by this wonder-working power; and Protestants, having cast away the shield of truth, will also be deluded.  Papists, Protestants, and worldlings will alike accept the form of godliness without the power, and they will see in this union a grand movement for the conversion of the world, and the ushering in of the long-expected millennium.

Manuscript Releases, Volume Five, p 61-62
We are living in a most solemn period.  Satan and evil angels are arrayed against us with mighty power.  The world is on their side to help them, and the most lamentable fact is that professed Sabbathkeepers, claiming to believe important, solemn truth, unite their forces with the combined influences of the powers of darkness to distract and hinder or tear down that which He [Christ] has required His chosen instruments to build up.  Some do not work directly to tear down, but indirectly.  They look on with indifference, express doubts, suspicion, fears, and need greater evidence than a doubting Thomas.  They will not, or do not, put their hand to the work with zeal and exert their energies to build up.  Their influence is recorded as one which retards the work of advance and reform among God's people.

Manuscript Releases, Volume Eighteen, p 30
One of the marked characteristics of these false religious powers in that while they profess to have the character and features of a lamb, while they profess to be allied to heaven, they reveal by their actions that they have the heart of a dragon, that they are instigated by and united with satanic power, the same power that created war in heaven when Satan sought the supremacy and was expelled from heaven.

Sons and Daughters of God, p 190
This Holy Book has withstood the assaults of Satan, who has united with evil men to make everything of divine character shrouded in clouds and darkness.  But the Lord has preserved this Holy Book by His own miraculous power in its present shape,--a chart or guidebook to the human family to show them the way to heaven.  .  .  .  This Word .  .  .  is the guidebook to the inhabitants of a fallen world, bequeathed to them, that by studying and obeying the directions, not one soul would lose its way.

The Spirit of Prophecy, Volume One, p 31
Satan held a consultation with his evil angels.  They did not all readily unite to engage in this hazardous and terrible work.  He told them that he would not intrust any one of them to accomplish this work; for he thought that he alone had wisdom sufficient to carry forward so important an enterprise.  He wished them to consider the matter while he should leave them and seek retirement, to mature his plans.  He sought to impress upon them that this was their last and only hope.  If they failed here, all prospect of regaining and controlling Heaven, or any part of God's creation, was hopeless.
He shuddered at the thought of plunging the holy, happy pair into the misery and remorse he was himself enduring.  He seemed in a state of indecision; at one time firm and determined, then hesitating and wavering.  His angels were seeking him, their leader, to acquaint him with their decision.  They will unite with Satan in his plans, and with him bear the responsibility, and share the consequences.

Supplement to the Christian Experience and Views of Ellen G. White, p 6-7
I saw the rapidity with which this delusion was spreading.  A train of cars was shown me, going with the speed of lightning.  The angel bade me look carefully.  I fixed my eyes upon the train.  It seemed that the whole world was on board; that there could not be one left.  Said the angel: "They are binding in bundles ready to burn."  Then he shewed me the conductor, who looked like a stately fair person, which all the passengers looked up to and reverenced.  I was perplexed, and asked my attending angel who it was.  Said he, "It is Satan.  He is the conductor in the form of an angel of light.  He has taken the world captive.  They are given over to strong delusions, to believe a lie that they may be damned."  This agent, the next highest in order to him, is the engineer, and others of his agents are employed in different offices as he may need them, and they are all going with lightning speed to perdition.  They are binding in bundles ready to burn.  I asked the angel if there were none left.  He bade me look in an opposite direction, and I saw a little company traveling a narrow pathway.  All seemed to be firmly united, and bound together by the truth, in bundles, or companies.  Said the angel, "The third angel is binding them (sealing them) in bundles for the heavenly garner.

The Spirit of Prophecy, Volume Two, p 85-86
Let us pause in the history of Christ's earthly life, and briefly notice the events prior to his advent in a world of sin.  Satan, after compassing the fall of Adam and Eve, had boasted that he was monarch of the earth, and it was true that in all ages of the world he had found many followers.  But he had failed to unite fallen man with him as he had hoped to do, and thus reign supreme over the whole earth.  Though man in his fallen state was suffering the consequence of his disobedience, yet he was not without hope.  He was unable, because of his guilt, to come directly before God with his supplications, but the plan of redemption, devised in Heaven, transferred the sentence of death from the obedient and faithful, to a substitute.  There must be the shedding of blood, for death was the consequence of man's sin.  In the slain victim, man was to see for the time being the fulfillment of God's word: "Ye shall surely die."  The flowing blood also signified an atonement, and pointed forward to a Redeemer who would one day come to the world and die for the sins of man, thus fully vindicating is Father's law.
