GUIDING  PRINCIPLES  REGARDING  DREAMS  and  VISIONS

Paulson Collection (PC) 128-30
A sister, in a letter to her friends, speaks with much enthusiasm of a statement by Brother ______, that Sister White had seen that the time had come when, if we hold the right relation to God, all can have the gift of prophecy to the same extent as do those who are now having visions. Where is the authority for this statement? I must believe that the sister failed to understand Brother ______, for I cannot think that he made the statement. The writer continues: "Brother ______ said last night that is the case, not that God will speak to all for the benefit of every one else, but to each for his own benefit, and this will fulfill the prophecy of Joel. He stated that this is already being developed in numerous instances. He spoke as if he thought none would hold such a leading position as Sister White had done, and will still do. Referred to Moses as a parallel. He was a leader, but many others are referred to as prophesying, though their prophecies are not published. He, (Brother ______), will not give permission to have the matter copied for general circulation that has been read here from some sister. I wonder if you have seen one of these visions?..."
These ideas in relation to prophesying, I do not hesitate to say, might better never have been expressed. Such statements prepare the way for a state of things that Satan will surely take advantage of to bring in spurious exercises. There is danger, not only that unbalanced minds will be led into fanaticism, but that designing persons will take advantage of this excitement to further their own selfish purposes. Jesus has raised His voice in warning: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits." "Thus saith the Lord of hosts, hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain. They speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord."...
The greatest care should be exercised concerning those who claim to receive revelations from God. There needs to be much close watching and much praying. Those who are acting a part in the great work for these last days need to counsel together in regard to every new thing that shall be introduced, for no one man's mind is to be left to judge of, or to place before the public, important matters which have a relation to the cause of God. At this very time we are suffering from the reproach that was brought on the cause in the first message by unwise, ill-balanced minds, who thought they were obtaining a wonderful experience which should receive the credence of all men. In our early experience we had to encounter their over-strained humility and false notions. The first labor given me to do was to reprove their man-made tests. The testimony which I bore against fanaticism gained for me the envy, jealousy, evil-surmising, and criticism of those who participated in those movements. We know full well what it cost us personally because we would not receive the visions, dreams, and testimonies of those fanatics. We were compelled to know something of their cruel influence upon the cause of God. The truth had to bear the reproach of the error and fanaticism which we were everywhere called to condemn and reprove. And now that fanaticism I labored faithfully to repress, bearing the testimony given me of God to counteract its baleful influence is by Grant and Canright charged upon me. I have been shown that whenever and wherever God works, we must watch; every man and woman must stand as a faithful sentinel, for the arch-deceiver is waiting and ready to set in operation various devices for misleading souls. If possible he will mingle the counterfeit with the genuine, so that, in the effort to separate the two, souls will be imperiled. Whenever and wherever God works, Satan and his angels are on the ground.
It is no time now to be careless and ignorant of Satan's masterly devices to draw the people into deceptions and delusions.

PRINCIPLES:
--It is wrong to conclude that many can have the gift of visions and dreams.
--It is wrong to conclude that God will give visions and dreams just for the benefit of the one having them, and not for the benefit of all.
--It is wrong to conclude that the prophecy of Joel is fulfilled by one having dreams and visions for their own benefit.
--Satan will take advantage of those who believe their dreams and visions are from God and just for their benefit.
--Great care should be exercised regarding those who claim to receive revelations from God.
--There needs to be counseling together in regards to one having visions and dreams so that not just one mind will be the judge if these are truly from God or not.
--Satan will mingle the counterfeit with the genuine to mislead souls.
--Whenever and wherever God works, Satan and his angels are active.

Acts of Apostles, p 41 (Spirit of Prophecy, book 3, 268)
In answer to the accusation of the priests Peter showed that this demonstration was in direct fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel, wherein he foretold that such power would come upon men to fit them for a special work. "Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem," he said, "be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: for these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel: And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: and on My servants and on My handmaidens I will pour out in those days of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy."

PRINCIPLES:
--The direct fulfillment of the words of Joel regarding having dreams and visions was during the time of the Apostles, and also with Ellen White.

Testimonies for the Church, vol 1, p 569-70 (Testimonies, vol 5, p 658)
I would call especial attention to the remarkable dreams given in this little work, all with harmony and distinctness illustrating the same things. The multitude of dreams arise from the common things of life, with which the Spirit of God has nothing to do. There are also false dreams, as well as false visions, which are inspired by the spirit of Satan. But dreams from the Lord are classed in the word of God with visions and are as truly the fruits of the spirit of prophecy as visions. Such dreams, taking into the account the persons who have them and the circumstances under which they are given, contain their own proofs of their genuineness.

PRINCIPLES:
     --3 types of dreams:
1--The multitude of dreams arise from the common things of life which the Spirit of God has nothing to do with.
2--There are false dreams and visions inspired by Satan.
3--Dreams from the Lord are also classified as visions.
--Dreams and visions from God are not given just to any person.
--Dreams and visions from God are given under special circumstances.
--Dreams and visions from God contain their own proof of genuineness.

For two nights I have had very plain dreams in regard to Dr. Burke. In these dreams it was plainly laid open before me that the reason Dr. Burke refused to see me was that he was guilty of wrong and sin, and refused to come to the light lest his deeds should be reproved. I am quite anxious to hear from the Rural Health Retreat, for Dr. Burke sent in his resignation just before we left. I am more and more convinced that rebellion is almost incurable. If a man proves a traitor once he is apt to become a traitor the second time. One thing is certain we cannot trust Dr Burke again under any circumstances, as he has gone as far as he has in denouncing me and my work. Never would he have done this if he had not for quite a length of time been walking in the sparks of his own kindling, separating himself from the Sun of righteousness.

PRINCIPLES:
--Dreams and visions from God are very plain and distinct--especially in exposing sins and corruptions of others.
--Rebellion against God and His word of reproof is almost incurable.

Testimonies, vol 1, p 608
We now believe that much in the foregoing dreams was given to illustrate our trials arising from wrongs existing at Battle Creek, our labors in clearing ourselves from cruel charges, and also our labors, with the blessing of God, in setting things right. If this view of the dreams be correct, may we not hope, from other portions of them not yet fulfilled, that our future will be more favorable than the past?

Manuscript Releases, book 21, p 317
I am sure that the dreams that I have had of late teach me lessons that there is a neglect to get the better classes to become interested while the poor classes are not to be neglected, neither should the higher and more intelligent classes be overlooked. I have been, in dreams, instructed that we overlook the fields close by us to labor in far away fields, and we pick very inferior berries when there are larger and a better quality of berries all ready to be gathered. And we are making a mistake in this kind of labor.

E.G. White Biography, book 2, p 413
The large tent is pitched and meetings have been held in it since last Thursday....We felt that the time had come for something to be done in California....We have seen and felt that the idea of our ministering brethren was altogether too contracted. They were for pitching the tent in small places, but shunning the large cities. I had dreams that in thus doing, they were not doing the work God would have them do.

PRINCIPLES:
--Dreams and visions from God instruct the one having them how to make God's cause and His work more efficient.

Patriarchs and Prophets, p 219
But a divine hand was about to open the prison gates. The king of Egypt had in one night two dreams, apparently pointing to the same event and seeming to foreshadow some great calamity. He could not determine their significance, yet they continued to trouble his mind. The magicians and wise men of his realm could give no interpretation. The king's perplexity and distress increased, and terror spread throughout his palace. The general agitation recalled to the chief butler's mind the circumstances of his own dream; with it came the memory of Joseph, and a pang of remorse for his forgetfulness and ingratitude. He at once informed the king how his own dream and that of the chief baker had been interpreted by a Hebrew captive, and how the predictions had been fulfilled....
Pharaoh then proceeded to relate his dreams: "Behold, I stood upon the bank of the river: and, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fat-fleshed and well-favored; and they fed in a meadow: and, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill-favored and lean-fleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness: and the lean and the ill-favored kine did eat up the first seven fat kine: and when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill-favored, as at the beginning. So I awoke. And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good: and, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them: and the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me."

The Signs of the Times, 04-29-97
"And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to show the king his dreams." "And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream....Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can show me the interpretation thereof. The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can show the king's matter." "It is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can show it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh."

The Youth's Instructor, 11-09-93
In all the gatherings of young and old, there is present an uninvited guest, a witness from heaven, as there was a witness at the sacrilegious feast of Belshazzar. Could those who dishonor God by their words and actions, behold the writing in the record, their countenances would change, as surely as did the countenance of the king when he saw the part of the bloodless hand that wrote on the wall of his palace. You may think that you are sinning in secret, or you may be entirely indifferent to the matter; but for all that, every dishonoring word spoken against God will bring its sure reward. That which you sow you will also reap. The Lord has said, "Them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed." You may suppose that your reasonings are very clear and sharp. Nebuchadnezzar thought the same. Warnings were given him in dreams, and not one of his wise men could interpret them. Daniel alone was found to interpret the dreams of the king, and to add words given him of God, to exhort the king to repentance and reformation.

Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 02-08-81
The terror of the king increases. He is conscious that this writing is a rebuke of his impious feast, and yet he cannot tell its exact import. The queen then reminds him that there is a man in his kingdom "in whom is the spirit of the holy gods," and that in the days of his father, "light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods was found in him;" whom his father "made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation."

PRINCIPLES:
--Great men, who are non-believers but who have power to harm or help God's people, may be given dreams from God, but they will not be able to interpret them, nor will any non-believer be able to do so either.
--Only a highly favored believer--one who follows all of God's truths and has honored God consistently for years will be able to interpret correctly a dream from God given to a non-believing great person.

Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald--1851 Extra, 07-21-51 (Early Writings, p 12)
At the age of thirteen I heard William Miller deliver his second course of lectures in Portland, Maine. I then felt that I was not holy, not ready to see Jesus....My soul was thirsting for full and free salvation, but knew not how to obtain it.
In 1842, I constantly attended the second advent meetings in Portland, Maine, and fully believed that the Lord was coming. I was hungering and thirsting for full salvation, an entire conformity to the will of God. Day and night I was struggling to obtain this priceless treasure, that all the riches of earth could not purchase. As I was bowed before God praying for this blessing, the duty to go and pray in a public prayer meeting was presented before me. I had never prayed vocally in meeting, and drew back from the duty, fearing that if I should attempt to pray I would be confounded....
In this state of mind (melancholy and in deep despair) I remained for three weeks, with not one ray of light to pierce the thick clouds of darkness around me. I then had two dreams which gave me a faint ray of light and hope. After that I opened my mind to my devoted mother. She told me that I was not lost, and advised me to go and see Bro. Stockman, who then preached to the Advent people in Portland. I had great confidence in him, for he was a devoted and beloved servant of Christ. His words affected me and led me to hope. I returned home, and again went before the Lord, and promised that I would do and suffer any thing if I could have the smiles of Jesus. The same duty was presented. There was to be a prayer meeting that evening which I attended, and when others knelt to pray I bowed with them trembling, and after two or three had prayed, I opened my mouth in prayer before I, was aware of it, and the promises of God looked to me like so many precious pearls that were to be received by only asking for them. As I prayed the burden and agony of soul that I had so long felt left me, and the blessing of God came upon me like the gentle dew, and I gave glory to God for what I felt, but I longed for more. I could not be satisfied till I was filled with the fullness of God. Inexpressible love for Jesus filled my soul. Wave after wave of glory rolled over me until my body grew stiff. Everything was shut out from me but Jesus and glory, and I knew nothing of what was passing around me. (see Early Writings, p 78-81 for the two dreams.)

PRINCIPLES:
--Dreams and visions from God may come upon young people, but they do not come upon those youth who do not feel the need of a full conversion, who do not have a thirst for a full and free salvation, and an entire conformity to the will of God.
--Those who are chosen by God to have visions and dreams will have such a deep experience in Christ that it will truly be an extraordinary experience.

Spiritual Gifts, book 3, p 139
Jacob appeared to regard the dreams of his son with indifference. But he had been often instructed by the Lord in dreams himself, and he believed that the Lord was teaching Joseph in the same manner. He reproved Joseph that his true feelings might not be discovered by his envious brothers.

PRINCIPLES:
--The Lord chooses to give dreams of instruction to those of His people who have a distinct importance upon His church and people--present and future--not just to any ordinary soul.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 89 (Manuscript Releases, vol 14, p 189)
Anna Garmire was thus injured. Her father and mother made her believe that her childish dreams were revelations from God. Her father talked to the child as one chosen of God; all her fancies and dreams were written down as Anna's visions. She had figures and symbols presented to her, and had reproofs for her mother and for her father. After a scathing reproof, there followed the most flattering representations of the wonderful things the Lord would do for them. These things I was pointed to as spurious, a deception. They descended to the most minute and trifling matters, commingled common, cheap things with important subjects. The imagination was largely developed, there was a mingling of the sacred and the common. The truth of God was belittled, and yet some received these pretended revelations, and carried out their teaching. A little party was formed who were apparently inspired by them, and the visions were declared to be more spiritual than the visions of Sister White.

Manuscript Releases, vol 14, p 192
There were false dreams and false visions in abundance. Persons were reproving and rebuking others, accusing them of pride and selfishness, impurity and corruption. The light was given me, "Believe them not." They mingled with their work a commonness, a cheapness of talk and action that was earthly and sensual. They met some with censure, then healed the wound with flattery, telling them they would do some great thing. The flattery part was pleasant, and deceived souls received the message as from God. The manifestations through Anna Phillips present the same features as did those we met in our experience long ago, and similar results will follow.

PRINCIPLES:
--Childish dreams and visions are not from God.
--It is an injury to any child when their parents make them believe that their dreams are from God, or that they have been chosen of God.
--Dreams may have plenty of figures and symbols in them, and may even contain censure and reproofs for others, yet this does not make it originate from God.
--Dreams and visions which have flattery in them, are not from God.
--Dreams and visions which deal with the most minute and trifling matters are not from God.
--Dreams and visions which commingle common, cheap things with important sacred subjects are not from God.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 08-30-06 (Selected Messages, book 1, p 25)
The Bible points to God as its Author; yet it was written by human hands; and in the varied style of its different books it presents the characteristics of the several writers. The truths revealed are all `given by inspiration of God' (2 Tim. 3:16); yet they are expressed in the words of men. The Infinite One by his Holy Spirit had shed light into the minds and hearts of his servants. He has given dreams and visions, symbols and figures; and those to whom the truth was thus revealed, have themselves embodied the thought in human language.

PRINCIPLES:
--The one to whom God sends His light in dreams and visions, are to write down this light for the benefit, instruction, and hope of His people, not just for the present, but future.

Spirit of Prophecy, vol 4, p 91-92
In the gloom of his dungeon, John Huss had foreseen the triumph of the true faith. Returning, in his dreams, to the humble parish where he had preached the gospel, he saw the pope and his bishops effacing the pictures of Christ which he had painted on the walls of his chapel. The sight caused him great distress; but the next day he was filled with joy as he beheld many artists busily engaged in replacing the figures in greater numbers and brighter colors. When their work was completed, the painters exclaimed to the immense crowd surrounding them, "Now let the popes and bishops come! They shall never efface them more!" Said the Reformer, as he related his dream, "I am certain that the image of Christ will never be effaced. They have wished to destroy it, but it shall be painted in all hearts by much better preachers than myself."

PRINCIPLES:
--God may choose to give dreams to those of His servants who are doing a great work in spreading His gospel and who are in great despair and under persecution and danger.

Spalding and Magan Collection, p 136
The question has been asked me, Have you any light for us? If so give it to us. From time to time many things have been opened before me, and often has come just before difficulties have arisen. Thus it was when I was at Stanmore a few weeks ago. All through the night, in my dreams, we were making changes. Some were packing up, and moving to other localities. When examination was made of the purposes of each, there was much said. Some said they were on the way to Cooranbong, where they intended to locate in connection with the school. They said they purposed to work as work should be provided for them in any line whatever. If they could not take all the studies they would take what they could, and learn how to work. This, they said, would fit them for practical life and for the work to be done in the missionary field. They said they could see that great changes must be wrought in their own minds in the living policy before they could be prepared to enlighten other minds.

PRINCIPLES:
--Often God sends dreams to His chosen just before a difficulty arises in which the cause of God might be affected.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 49
We shall encounter false claims; false prophets will arise; there will be false dreams and false visions; but preach the Word, be not drawn away from the voice of God in His Word. Let nothing divert the mind. The wonderful, the marvelous, will be represented and presented. Through satanic delusions, wonderful miracles, the claims of human agents will be urged. Beware of all this.

PRINCIPLES:
--Satan will be entering God's church and working through false visions and dreams.
--Be not drawn away from the voice of God found in His word--the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.

Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 11-04-75 (Counsels on Health, p 465)
Several speakers had addressed large and attentive congregations at the camp meeting at Rome, N. Y., on first-day, September 12, 1875. The following night I dreamed that a young man of noble appearance came into the room where I was, immediately after I had been speaking. This same person has appeared before me in important dreams to instruct me from time to time during the past twenty-six years. Said he, You have called the attention of the people to important subjects, which, to a large number, are strange and new. To some they are intensely interesting. The laborers in word and doctrine have done what they could in presenting the truth, which has raised inquiry in minds and awakened an interest. But unless there is a more thorough effort made to fasten these impressions upon minds, your efforts now made will prove nearly fruitless. Satan has many attractions ready to divert the mind; and the cares of this life, and the deceitfulness of riches all combine to choke the seed of truth sown in the heart, and in most cases it bears no fruit.

E.G. White Biography, vol 3, p 17
The young man that I had often seen in my dreams seemed to be by the side of the teacher. He said to the teacher, "You are to a very large degree responsible for that miserable copy; the best of writers would have failed under similar circumstances. If the boy had been left to himself and written without so much dictation, he could have produced a fair copy. He could not follow your directions without being confused and spoiling the copy. That poor boy has had too little encouragement and love, and too much censuring for mistakes that are common to all.

Life Sketches, p 208 (Maranatha, p 24, Pamphlets #122, p 3)
Then a young man whom I had frequently seen in my dreams, came into the council. He listened with deep interest to the words that were spoken, and then, speaking with deliberation and authoritative confidence, said...

Temperance, p 200
I dreamed that there was a large company assembled together in the open air, and a tall young man that I have often seen in my dreams, when important matters are under consideration, was sitting near the chairman of the meeting. This young man arose and passed to the men that seemed to be at the head of the company and said, "Here is a paper I wish you to attach your names to, every one of you." He presented it to Brother A first. He looked at it and read aloud, "You here pledge yourselves to abstain from all fermented wines and spirituous liquors of any kind, and use your influence to induce all others that you can to follow your example."

This Day With God, p 138
The young man who has so many times explained to me my dreams, spoke to you and said, "Eating and drinking with the drunkard....Who bought those bottles of drink?" Said you, "I bought them, for I could not get companions to sail with me unless I pleased their appetites in this respect."

Special Testimonies, Series A#7, p 3
A dignified looking personage, who had been repeatedly presented to me in my dreams as making one in our council meetings, and who seemed to have authority, was listening with the deepest interest to every word. He spoke with deliberation and with perfect assurance. "The whole world," he said, "is God's great vineyard. The cities and villages constitute a part of that vineyard. These must be worked, and not passed by. Satan will try to interpose himself, so as to discourage the workers, and prevent them from giving the message of light and warning in the more important as well as in the more secluded places. Desperate efforts will be made to turn the people from the truth of God to falsehood. Angels of heaven are commissioned to work with the efforts of God's appointed messengers. The preachers of the truth must encourage faith and hope, as did Christ, your Living Head. Keep humble and contrite in heart before God. Maintain an unwavering faith in the promises of God."

Manuscript Releases, vol 8, p 315 (Selected Messages, book 3, p 43-44; Manuscript Releases, vol 8, p 315; vol 1, p 24-25)
In my dreams I was at the Health Retreat, and I was told by my guide to mark everything I heard and to observe everything I saw. I was in a retired place, where I could not be seen, but could see all that went on in the room. Persons were settling accounts with you, and I heard them remonstrating with you in regard to the large sum charged for board and room and treatment. I heard you with firm, decided voice refuse to lower the charge. I was astonished to see that the charge was so high. You seemed to be the controlling power. I saw that the impression made by your course on the minds of those who were settling their bills was unfavorable to the institution. I heard some of your brethren pleading with you, telling you that your course was unwise and unjust, but you were as firm as a rock in your adherence to your course. You claimed that in what you were doing, you were working for the good of the institution. But I saw persons go from the Retreat anything but satisfied. Letter 30, June 11, 1887 p. 1, To J.D. Rice.

PRINCIPLES:
--When dreams and visions come to a believer, no other human--including a believer--gives them the interpretation, but they know it themselves or it is told them in the dream or vision.
--Those individuals whom God gives instruction in dreams and visions will be given the interpretation of these by their guides which they frequently see in these dreams.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 75 (Maranatha, p 155)
In the work in which my husband and I were called by the providence of God to act a part, even from its very beginning in 1843 and 1844, we have had the Lord to devise and plan for us, and He has worked out His plans through His living agents. False paths have been so often pointed out to us, and the true and safe paths so clearly defined in all the enterprises connected with the work given us to do, that I can say of a truth I am not ignorant of Satan's devices, nor of the ways and works of God. We have had to tax every power of mind, relying upon wisdom from God to guide us in our investigations, as we have had to review the different theories brought to our attention, weighing their merits and defects in the light shining from the Word of God and the things God has revealed to me through His Word and the testimonies, in order that we might not be deceived nor deceive others. We surrendered our will and way to God, and most earnestly supplicated His aid; and we never sought in vain. Many years of painful experience in connection with the work of God have made me acquainted with all kinds of false movements. Many times I have been sent to different places with the message, "I have a work for you to do in that place; I will be with you." When the occasion came, the Lord gave me a message for those who were having false dreams and visions, and in the strength of Christ I bore my testimony at the Lord's bidding. The most terrible denunciations were hurled against me, which they said were from the Lord, because I was opposing His work. They said that terrible calamities would come upon me, just as your Anna has prophesied; but I passed along perfectly conscious of the guardianship of heavenly angels.

PRINCIPLES:
--Even those who have been chosen by God and given dreams and visions must still go to the Word of God, or even go over their past dreams and visions, in order to find the correct answers to vexing problems or for guidance into their investigations into various problems involving the cause of God.
--Those who are reproved for having false dreams and visions react with disbelief, or with denunciations, or with threatenings.

Healthful Living, p 165 (Selected Messages, book 2, p 415; Review and Herald, 6-13-99)
If a third meal be eaten at all, it should be light, and several hours before going to bed. But with many the poor tired stomach may complain of weariness in vain. More food is forced upon it, which sets the digestive organs in motion, again to perform the same round of labor through the sleeping hours. The sleep is generally disturbed with unpleasant dreams, and in the morning they awake unrefreshed. There is a sense of languor and loss of appetite. A lack of energy is felt through the entire system. In a short time the digestive organs are worn out, for they have had no time to rest. Such persons become miserable dyspeptics, and wonder what has made them so. The cause has brought the sure result. If this practice is indulged in a great length of time, the health will become seriously impaired. The blood becomes impure, the complexion sallow, and eruptions will frequently appear. You will often hear complaints of frequent pains and soreness in the region of the stomach; and while performing labor, the stomach becomes so tired that they are obliged to desist from work, and rest. They seem to be at a loss to account for this state of things; for, setting this aside, they are apparently healthy....After the stomach, which has been overtaxed, has performed its task, it is exhausted, which causes faintness. Here many are deceived, and think that it is the want of food that produces such feelings, and without giving the stomach time to rest, they take more food, which for the time removes the faintness.

The Signs of the Times, 03-27-84 (Selected Messages, book 2, p 98-99; Maranatha, p 192)
There will be false dreams and false visions, which have some truth, but lead away from the original faith. The Lord has given men a rule by which to detect them: "To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." If they belittle the law of God, if they pay no heed to his will as revealed in the testimonies of his Spirit, they are deceivers. They are controlled by impulse and impressions, which they believe to be from the Holy Spirit, and consider more reliable than the inspired word. They claim that every thought and feeling is an impression of the Spirit; and when they are reasoned with out of the Scriptures, they declare that they have something more reliable. But while they think that they are led by the Spirit of God, they are in reality following an imagination wrought upon by Satan.

PRINCIPLES:
--False dreams and visions will have some truth mixed in, but will lead away from the original faith.
--All dreams and visions are to be tested by Isaiah 8:20--to the Bible and the Testimonies of His Spirit--if they belittle the law or pay no heed to His will in the Testimonies, then the dreams are false and the one having them is a deceiver.
--Those having false dreams and visions are controlled by impulse and impressions which they believe are from the Holy Spirit, but which is from an imagination wrought upon by Satan.

Testimonies and Studies on Diets and Foods, p 38 (Child Guidance 389-90)
Another pernicious habit is that of eating just before bed-time. The regular meals may have been taken; but because there is a sense of faintness, more food is eaten. By indulgence, this wrong practice becomes a habit, and often so firmly fixed that it is thought impossible to sleep without food. As a result of eating late suppers, the digestive process is continued through the sleeping hours. But though the stomach works constantly, its work is not properly accomplished. The sleep is often disturbed with unpleasant dreams, and in the morning the person awakes unrefreshed, and with little relish for breakfast. When we lie down to rest, the stomach should have its work all done, that it, as well as the other organs of the body, may enjoy rest. For persons of sedentary habits, late suppers are particularly harmful. With them the disturbance created is often the beginning of disease that ends in death.

Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, p 50-51 (Counsels on Health, p 118-119)
Many indulge in the pernicious habit of eating just before retiring. They may have taken their regular meals, yet because they feel a sense of faintness, they think they must have a lunch. By indulging this wrong practice it becomes a habit, and they feel as though they could not sleep without food. In many cases this faintness comes because the digestive organs have been too severely taxed through the day in disposing of the great quantities of food forced upon them. These organs need a period of entire rest from labor, to recover their exhausted energies. A second meal should never be eaten until the stomach has had time to recover from the labor of digesting the preceding meal. When we lie down at night, the stomach should have its work all done, that it, as well as other portions of the body, may enjoy rest. But if more food is forced upon it, the digestive organs are put in motion again, to perform the same round of labor through the sleeping hours. The sleep of such is often disturbed with unpleasant dreams, and in the morning they awake unrefreshed. When this practice is followed, the digestive organs lose their natural vigor, and the person finds himself a miserable dyspeptic. And not only does the transgression of nature's laws affect the individual unfavorably, but others suffer more or less with him. Let any one take a course that irritates him in any way, and see how quickly he manifests impatience! He cannot, without special grace, speak or act calmly. He casts a shadow wherever he goes. How can any one say, then, "It is nobody's business what I eat or drink"?

PRINCIPLES:
--Going to bed with any food in the stomach, will likely produce dreams during the sleep which are not from God.

Special Testimonies on Education, p 111-12 (Fundamentals of Christian Education, p 339)
Those who come to the Battle Creek school should be speedily and thoroughly pushed through such a course of study as would be of practical value in the healthy development of the body and holy activity of the soul. In his gospel, God speaks not merely to benefit the growth of the mental capacity of man, but to instruct how the moral senses may be quickened. This is illustrated in the case of Daniel and the three Hebrews. They kept the fear and love of God ever before them, and the result is recorded as follows: "As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams."

Special Testimonies, Series A#9, p 60-61
"And as for these four children. God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams." These youth had the Lord as their educator. The golden links of the chain of heaven connected the finite with the infinite. They were partakers of the divine nature. They were very careful to keep themselves in touch with God. They prayed and studied and brought into their practical life strictly conscientious, humble minds. They walked with God as did Enoch. The word of the Lord was their meat and their drink. "And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm."

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who are chosen by God to have dreams and visions must have kept the fear and love of God ever before them before such dreams and visions came.
--God will not give dreams and visions to those who do not follow the 8 laws of health.
--God will not choose to give just any person dreams and visions, but only if He forsees they will help establish His work or strengthen His cause.
--If we are not partakers of the divine nature, if we are not careful to keep ourselves in connection with God, if we do not pray and study and incorporate into our daily lives the truths we find, if we do not have a strictly conscientious and humble mind, if we do not walk with God as did Enoch, if the Word of the Lord is not our meat and drink, then we cannot possibly believe that dreams and visions will come to us from God.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 21-22, 96
The enemy is preparing to deceive the whole world by his miracle-working power. He will assume to personate the angels of light, to personate Jesus Christ. Every one who teaches the truth for this time is to preach the Word. Those who cling to the Word will not throw open the doors for Satan by making unguarded statements in reference to prophesying or to dreams and visions. To a greater or less degree false manifestations have been coming in, here and there, since 1844, after the time when we looked for the second coming of Christ....We shall have them more and more, and like faithful sentinels we must be on guard. Letters are coming to me from many persons concerning visions which they have had and feel it their duty to relate. May the Lord help His servants to be cautious.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who cling to the Word will not make unguarded statements regarding having dreams and visions, nor will they be involved in these false manifestations which will come in more and more among God's people.
--God wants His people to be faithful sentinels on guard against persons having visions and dreams among us.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 78
The manifestations of your daughter are a similar deception. And your encouraging these things in her will prove her ruin, and the ruin of others, unless something breaks the deception. You called these false visions and meaningless dreams the wonderful light of God, but it is like the chaff to the wheat. This is a serious matter. It will have a decided influence upon your family. While you regard your daughter's words as spoken under the influence of the Spirit of God, it will be the same to you as though they were true. You are under strong delusion of Satan. You will claim to credit them, and thus your confidence in the veritable, genuine messages from God will be uprooted. And so will it be with all who believe as you do. This is why Satan is so constantly pressing in the spurious-- to lead away from the truth.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who encourage a young person--especially their own child--to have or continue to have dreams and visions will end up ruining the young person and prove their own ruin as well as others, unless the deception breaks off them.
--Dreams and visions which are meaningless are false.
--Those who regard another person's dreams and visions to be from God will receive these as though they were true, thus they will be under the strong delusion of Satan.
--Satan brings in false visions and dreams to lead away from the truth.

1888 Materials, p 697 (Selected Messages, book 2, p 80; Manuscript Releases, vol 15, p 12)
Since visiting your house Sabbath afternoon, Aug. 23, some things have rested on my mind to say to you. I have no hesitancy in saying that Anna's visions are not of God. The dreams that the members of your family have had are a deception of Satan. Will the Lord give light through an impure, corrupt channel? - No. This wonderful interpretation of Scripture which you have accepted, came from a man who was wholly deceived. Such ideas as he advanced, such interpretation of the third angel's message and other Bible truths, such corrupting, sensual things, could only come from a mind defiled. My pen refuses to trace his blasphemous pretensions. Here is where you received your light. Anna's visions have no higher source than the ideas you accepted from the blind man Jones. Can an impure fountain send forth pure water?- Never. The imagination of the man was wholly defiled, and yet he presented his error as solemn, sacred truth. Think you the Lord would pass by his people, who are striving to do his work, and impart light to one corrupt in heart, whose theories would lead to moral pollution and defilement of soul and body?- No, indeed no.

PRINCIPLES:
--When more than one member of a family is having dreams and visions, then God is not involved--it is the deception of Satan.
--God will not send His instructions through a person who is not following His revealed truth.
--God will not send instruction through a person who has an impure imagination.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 86-87
Do you not think I know something about these matters? All along our pathway to the heavenly Canaan we see many souls that have made shipwreck of faith, and in their false movements have led others astray through the supposition that they were led of God in special revelations. I have had to write many, many pages to correct these errors. I have been burdened and oppressed night after night, unable to sleep because of the agony of my soul for God's heritage, His people, who are in danger of being misled. Many things in these visions and dreams seem to be all straight, a repetition of that which has been in the field for many years; but soon they introduce a jot here, a tittle of error there, just a little seed which takes root and flourishes, and many are defiled therewith.

Manuscript Releases, vol 4, p 119
The work of Anna Phillips does not bear the signature of heaven. I know what I am talking about. In our first experience in the infancy of this cause, we had to meet similar manifestations. Many such revelations were given, and we had a most disagreeable work in meeting this element and giving it no place. Some things stated in these revelations were fulfilled, and this led some to accept them as genuine.
....Purity was the burden of the messages given, and for a while everything appeared to be reaching a high state of purity and holiness. But the inwardness of these matters was opened to me: I was shown what would be the outcome of this teaching.
Those who were engaged in this work were not a superficial, immoral class, but persons who had been the most devoted workers. Satan saw an opportunity to take advantage of the state of things, and to disgrace the cause of God....
This pointing out of the imperfections and wrongs of individuals is of exactly the same character as in the false messages not only in Maine, but in New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts....The state of things was terrible. Letter 103, March 15, 1894.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who believe that they were led of God through special revelations were involved in error and were also leading others in these false movements.
--When Satan gives false dreams and visions, many things in these seem to be all straight, but it is only a repetition of that which has already been known for many years.
--When Satan gives false dreams and visions, all seems to be true, and even some revelations or prophecies may come true, but soon error is gradually introduced--a jot here, a tittle there, a little seed which takes root and flourishes to defile.
--Those whom Satan is giving dreams and visions to among us may be pure in life, not superficial or immoral, and be very devoted workers, but they are to be met and opposed and given no place in the cause or work of God.
--The dreams and visions which Satan uses to deceive others may start out burdened with purifying the church of God, yet it will end up corrupting and disgracing the church of God.
--Those who are having dreams and visions about others--excepting a true prophet such as Ellen White, and who are pointing out the imperfections and wrongs shown them, are deceived, are bearing false messages and will bring about a terrible state of things among God's church.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 93
It is no light matter to substitute for God's revealed will, opinions and assertions, dreams, symbols, and figures from human, finite beings. Our actions, words, spirit, and influence are watched and criticized. Those whom God has chosen to be His ministers are to settle solidly into His Word, and let the Word of God be their authority.

PRINCIPLES:
--The authority for any decision or action must be from the Word of God--Bible and the Testimonies--not from opinions, assertions, dreams, symbols, or figures from human, finite beings.

Selected Messages, book 2, p 95 (The Home Missionary, 12-01-94)
The people want a sign, as in the days of Christ. Then the Lord told them that no sign should be given them. The sign that should be manifest now and always is the working of the Holy Spirit upon the mind of the teacher, to make the Word as impressive as possible. The Word of God is not a dead, dry theory, but spirit and life. Satan would like nothing better than to call minds away from the Word, to look for and expect something outside of the Word to make them feel. They should not have their attention called to dreams and visions. If they would have eternal life, they must eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God.--Letter 68, 1894.

PRINCIPLES:
--Satan is constantly seeking to call our minds away from God's Word to look for and expect something outside of His Word--such as dreams and visions--with which to guide our steps.

Selected Messages, book 3, p 404-05
There will be counterfeit messages coming from persons in all directions. One after another will rise up, appearing to be inspired, when they have not the inspiration of heaven, but are under the deception of the enemy. All who receive their messages will be led astray. Then let us walk carefully, and not open wide the door for the enemy to enter through impressions, dreams, and visions. God help us to look in faith to Jesus, and be guided by the words He has spoken. --Letter 66, 1894.

PRINCIPLES:
--One after another, from people in all directions, will claim to be led by impressions, dreams and visions, and all who believe them will be led astray.
--God wants His people to be guided by His words which He has already spoken in the Bible and the Testimonies, not through impressions, dreams, and visions today.

Spirit of Prophecy, vol 1, p 390-91
The hearts of the people are turned toward Solomon, as they were to David, and they obey him in all things. The Lord sends his angel to instruct Solomon by a dream in the night season. He dreams that God converses with him. "And God said, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David, my father, great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father; and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give, therefore, thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

PRINCIPLES:
--God just does not instruct any person through dreams and visions, but only to those individuals who have a very important position or work to do among His cause and church.

Spiritual Gifts, book 2, p 150
The meeting was held at the house of Bro. Preston, and was interesting from the commencement to its close. Bro. B. took a decided stand for the truth, and thanked the Lord that he had property, for he should use it in his cause. At our season of prayer in the morning at Bro. Abbey's, the Spirit of the Lord was poured out upon us, and I was taken off in vision, and saw that some of the church had been disfellowshipped without sufficient cause, through the influence of dreams and impressions. I was shown that Sr. E. P. was a child of God, and they had no cause for rejecting her. And others also had been set aside who should not have been, which had driven them nearly to despair.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who have dreams and visions from Satan will be against and may be even disfellowship those who refuse to accept them as being from God.

Life Sketches, p 284-85 (1880 edition)
Often did this oppressed brother come from Milton to Saratoga to ask our advice as to the course he should pursue. Said he, 'They say this heavy weight about my heart is the frown of God upon me because I do not sell.' He said he had ready means to use wherever the Lord called. We told him not to sink in discouragement, that if it was his duty to sell, the Lord was as willing to let him know it and feel the burden, as to teach it to his brethren. Once he came to see us, dizzy and distressed, having become nearly blind on the way. We felt sure his distress was in consequence of disease of the heart and told him so, that it was not because of neglected duty, for he was willing to do anything. The next day Brother S. handed us thirty dollars which was much needed by one of the brethren to enable him to labor in the gospel field. After we moved from Saratoga Springs to Rochester, we received a letter informing us that Brother S. was dead. He died of apoplexy. Oh, thought I, some who have oppressed that dear brother, and reproached him so unsparingly, and had false dreams and burdens which they spun out of their own bowels to extort from him means which should have been applied to God's cause, will have to give an account of these things. He received no sympathy from them while his heart was pressed as though a heavy weight was upon it. When in distress he was told, 'When you do your duty, sell and give alms, you will be free and in the light.' That aching heart is now still. He rests until the morning of the resurrection when we believe he will come forth immortal. Our testimony at Saratoga and vicinity was rejected by the covetous poor and also by the rich. We moved to Rochester and the cause went down.

Spiritual Gifts, book 2, p 156-57
The next day Bro. S. brought us two nice turkeys. We immediately sent them to market and received one dollar lacking five cents. I told Bro. S. that I would send one dollar to Bro. Wheeler. "Well," said Bro. S., "I will do something too," and he handed out thirty dollars which was much needed by Bro. W., and enabled him to labor again in the gospel field. After we moved from Saratoga Springs to Rochester, we received a letter informing us that Bro. S. was dead. He died of apoplexy. O, thought I, some who have oppressed that dear brother, and reproached him so unsparingly, and had false dreams and burdens which they spun out of their own bowels to extort from him means which should have been applied to God's cause, will have to give an account of these things. He received no sympathy from them while his heart was pressed, as though a heavy weight was upon it. When in distress he was told, "When you do your duty, sell and give alms, you will be free and in the light." That aching heart is now still. He rests until the morning of the resurrection, when we believe he will come forth immortal. Our testimony in Saratoga and vicinity was rejected by the covetous poor, and also by the rich, and the cause went down.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who have false dreams and false burdens created out of their own bowels, use these to obtain money from other sincere souls.

Conflict and Courage, p 171
The Lord never turned away a soul that came to Him in sincerity and humility. Why did he turn Saul away unanswered? The king had by his own act forfeited the benefits of all the methods of inquiring of God. He had rejected the counsel of Samuel the prophet; he had exiled David, the chosen of God; he had slain the priests of the Lord....He had sinned away the Spirit of grace, and could he be answered by dreams and revelations from the Lord? Saul did not turn to God with humility and repentance. It was not pardon for sin and reconciliation with God, that he sought, but deliverance from his foes. By his own stubbornness and rebellion he had cut himself off from God. There could be no return but by the way of penitence and contrition; but the proud monarch, in his anguish and despair, determined to seek help from another source....It was told the king that a woman who had a familiar spirit was living in concealment at Endor....Disguising himself, Saul went forth by night with but two attendants, to seek the retreat of the sorceress.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who refuse to follow all the directions of God, even though they occupy a great responsible position in God's work, will not be able to receive directions through dreams and visions from the Lord.

The Signs of the Times, 07-13-82
The first form of government over men was established by God himself, and acknowledge him as the only Sovereign. He made known his will by written commands and revelations, by messages to his chosen servants, by dreams, by signs, and wonders. He would have continued to be their king, had they content with his paternal care.

PRINCIPLES:
--The first form of God's government over man, which was before the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy were written, God make known His will chiefly through the supernatural communications--dreams and visions; but we are no longer under this form of government and we do have the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.

The Youth's Instructor, 09-27-94 (Signs of the Times, 07-04-95)
These deceivers will come, and, while claiming to be doing a special work for God, while professing to have advanced piety, to be sanctified, to see visions, and to have dreams, they will be doing the work of the enemy, and be found breaking the commandments of God. We should be on our guard, and bring these pretenders to the test; "to the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Shall we take heed to the solemn warnings of Christ, of Paul, and of John upon this point, and not be deceived by the subtle devices of the enemy, for Christ has said that the signs and wonders wrought by these deceivers will be so great that if it were possible they shall deceive the very elect.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those deceivers among us will claim to be doing work for God, and will have visions and dreams, but will be doing the work of the enemy.
--All dreams and visions must be tested by Isaiah 8:20.
--All God's people must be on their guard so as to not be deceived by dreams and visions or by those individuals who are having such.
--One of the ways which Satan will try to deceive the very elect will be through dreams and visions.

Manuscript Releases, vol 6, p 303
I get no light in dreams or in any other way to attend camp meetings. I pray for light. I cannot go upon any other's light. God will lead me. It will do our people good to be without my labor this season.

PRINCIPLES:
--God will not send dreams or visions to inform about going here or going there, unless it is of the utmost importance for His cause and truth.

1888 Materials, p 1243-1244
I would say to our dear brethren who have been so eager to accept everything that came in the form of visions and dreams, Beware that you be not ensnared. Read the warnings that have been given by the world's Redeemer to his disciples to be given again by them to the world. The word of God is solid rock, and we may plant our feet securely upon it. Every soul must needs be tested, every faith and doctrine must needs be tried by the law and the testimony. Take heed that no man deceive you. The warnings of Christ on this matter are needed at this time; for delusions and deceptions will come in among us, and will multiply as we near the end. "Of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch and remember." Bear in mind that trials of this character are to come upon us, not only from without, but from within our own ranks. Our individual safety is in entire consecration to God. Those who shall proclaim the truth in love and in the demonstration of the Spirit, are in danger of being considered self-confident and presumptuous. God alone can keep His people from the snare of putting confidence in self, and of failing to feel their dependence upon Him moment by moment. There are men and women who will exalt the messenger above the message, who will praise and extol the messenger, forgetting that it is God working wondrously through him for His own name's glory. They should give God praise that many souls are receiving through the human agent instruction that is making them wise unto salvation. They should give glory to God because they see through the interpretation of the word from the lips of the messenger, marvelous things out of the living oracles. They are filled with admiration, and their hearts burn within them as did the hearts of the disciples, as they journeyed from Jerusalem to Emmaus with a crucified but risen Saviour, who comforted their hearts as he opened to them the Scriptures. He showed them that their disappointment in relation to his mission and work had been a theme of prophecy, and that every specification had been fulfilled. When they had learned that the one who had walked and talked with them was no other than Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, they said one to another "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the Scriptures?"

PRINCIPLES:
--Do not accept everything that comes in the form of dreams and visions, else you will be ensnared.
--Test every soul, every faith and doctrine, and every dream and vision by Isaiah 8:20.
--The word of God is solid rock upon which our feet are to be securely planted--not dreams and visions.
--Christ has warned us that dreams and visions not originating from God will continue to multiply among us as we near the end, and these deceptions will come through our own brethren and sisters.

Christ's Object Lessons, p 356-357
Only by faithfulness in the little things can the soul be trained to act with fidelity under larger responsibilities. God brought Daniel and his fellows into connection with the great men of Babylon, that these heathen men might become acquainted with the principles of true religion. In the midst of a nation of idolaters, Daniel was to represent the character of God. How did he become fitted for a position of so great trust and honor? It was his faithfulness in the little things that gave complexion to his whole life. He honored God in the smallest duties, and the Lord co-operated with him. To Daniel and his companions God gave "knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams." Dan. 1:17.

PRINCIPLES:
--If we are not faithful in the little things, we cannot expect God to entrust us with great things--especially with dreams and visions.

E.G. White Biography, vol 2, p 242-43
--NOT ELLEN WHITE QUOTE--J. N. Loughborough had come to the conference with the deep impression that he should go to California, but he had revealed this to no one. In no less than twenty dreams he seemed to be working there! At the meeting the ministers were given an opportunity to express their preferences as to the fields in which they should labor during the coming year. After most had expressed themselves, James White asked, "Has no one had any impressions of duty with reference to the California field?" Up to this time Loughborough had remained silent: now he stood and spoke of his impressions and offered his services for work in the West. Loughborough reported on what followed:

PRINCIPLES:
--Even though Loughborough had some 20 dreams about him working in the California field, he called these impressions, and not dreams from the Lord. And even if these dreams could be considered from the Lord, Loughborough was no ordinary individual in the work and cause of God.

E.G. White Biography, vol 2, p 252
--NOT ELLEN WHITE QUOTE--They left Battle Creek with a somewhat open schedule, intending after the State meeting in New York to spend several weeks visiting the churches in that state. But as October was turning to November they received word of the rapidly failing health of Ellen's sister, Sarah Belden, in Connecticut, who was dying of "quick consumption" (tuberculosis). After two impressive dreams of being there, the Whites changed plans quickly. Appointments in New York were canceled, and on November 4 they were on the eastward-bound train. Letters indicated that Sarah's situation was critical (Letter 28, 1868), and now Ellen was on her way "to comfort her in the conflict she must have in giving up her children, five in number, the eldest, one year and a half younger than Willie." She added, "As she is reconciling herself to laying down her life's burdens, I may make the struggle less severe and soothe and heal the lacerated heart."-- Ibid . One of the five children was Frank E. Belden, who later became a writer of scores of well-known Adventist hymns. Ellen spent a week with her sister, who died a few days after their visit.

PRINCIPLES:
--To those who the Lord has clearly established as His messengers to His people through whom He relates instruction through dreams and visions, He may choose to change their set plans at any time in which He sees an emergency.

E.G. White Biography, vol 6, p 136-37
--NOT ELLEN WHITE QUOTE--One particular matter was brought to her (Ellen White's) attention in October. A nurse at Boulder Sanitarium, a faithful and devoted young woman, felt impressed that the Lord had bestowed on her the gift of prophecy. It all began with a dream she had, followed by other "dreams" and "visions."...
Among other points, she affirmed that "the Lord...instructed her as to how she should comb her hair," and "put her to the test as to whether she would give up different things for His sake..."

PRINCIPLES:
--Satan first starts his deceptions with one dream--possibly all truth, and when it is favorably accepted, then he brings in other dreams and may be even visions.
--After Satan brings in many dreams and/or visions, and these are accepted as being from God, he then instructs these deceived individuals as to how to do commonplace, nonsensical things--ie how to comb their hair, or to give up this or that thing to please her God.

E.G. White Biography, vol 6, p 183
"Then we knew not just what to do," she said, "although in the dreams of the night the assurance was given that we must not become discouraged; if we could not obtain the Buena Vista place, there would be a more advantageous place for our school."--Letter 187, 1909.

PRINCIPLES:
--God does not instruct, through dreams and visions, how or what the individual is to do when they are uncertain as to what course to pursue.

Testimonies, vol 1, p 34 (Evangelism, p 448;  Youth's Instructor, 11-03-08; Signs of the Times, 2-24-76; Life Sketches, p 42)
Night after night in my dreams I seemed to be laboring for the salvation of souls. At such times special cases were presented to my mind; these I afterward sought out and prayed with. In every instance but one these persons yielded themselves to the Lord. Some of our more formal brethren feared that I was too zealous for the conversion of souls, but time seemed to me so short that it behooved all who had a hope of a blessed immortality and looked for the soon coming of Christ, to labor without ceasing for those who were still in their sins and standing on the awful brink of ruin.

Notebook Leaflets, p 85
I felt that if I should come before you again I should say the same things that I was saying last night in my dreams. I seemed to be speaking to a company of people, who listened earnestly to my words. I was pleading with them to devote their energies to training their children for the future life. There were many in the congregation who were condemned by the truths spoken; for they had been giving misguided instruction, with scoldings and denials. They had not brought up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Paulson Collection, p 77
In my dreams I seem to be pleading with the believers in Battle Creek. I am so burdened for these souls who seem determined to fight against the message sent, that I awake in the night pleading with God to open the blind eyes.

E.G. White Biography, vol 3, p 199 (Testimonies, vol 5, p 68; Pamphlet #117, p 50)
I was told to gather up the light that had been given me, and let its rays shine forth to God's people. I have been doing this in articles in the papers....Again, while in prayer, the Lord revealed Himself. I was once more in Battle Creek. I was in many houses. I heard your words around your tables, and was sick at heart, burdened, and disgusted. The particulars, I have no liberty now to relate. I hope never to be called to mention them. I had also several most striking dreams.

Testimonies, vol 5, p 430
Dear Brother and Sister P: My soul is exceedingly sorrowful as I review your cases. Last night my mind was heavily burdened. In dreams I was conversing with you, Brother P. Your separation from God was so evident, and you were so blind in regard to your true condition, that it seemed like saying to a blind man, "See," to try to make you discern your true standing.

Testimonies, vol 5, p 507
In my dreams I have been talking to you as I have here written. My heart yearns over you with intensity. Trying as your case now is, do not despond. You need cheerfulness and decision. Seek for help from God. God is your friend. You are never alone. The Bible is your counselor. It is a light to them who are in darkness. Be steadfast in the hour of trial, for you will have new trials to meet. But cling to Jesus, and make Him your strength.

Pamphlets #157, p 23 (Testimonies, vol 5, p 532--SELECTIONS FROM A TESTIMONY TO THE OAKLAND CHURCH, FOUND IN TESTIMONY NO. 33)
Dear Brethren and Sisters at Oakland: My mind is drawn out to write to you. Again and again I find myself talking to you in my dreams, and in every case you are in trouble. But whatever comes, let it not enfeeble your moral courage, and cause your religion to degenerate into a heartless form. The loving Jesus is ready to bless abundantly; but we need to obtain an experience in faith, in earnest prayer, and in rejoicing in the love of God. Shall any of us be weighed in the balances and be found wanting? We must watch ourselves, watch the least unholy promptings of our nature, lest we become traitors to the high responsibilities God has bestowed upon us as his human agencies.

Testimonies on Sexual Behavior, p 160-61 (Manuscript Releases, vol 8, p 431)
I was in the night season in my dreams brought in connection with the Health Retreat. I felt grieved to see you unhappy and much discouraged....But while I was distressed over this revelation to me, there was One speaking with you, Dr. Q. His words reproved you, but were mingled with tender compassion. I cannot write the exact words as He spoke them. I will try my best to give you the import of them. He said: "You are nourishing despondency, but in this you are not wise; you will become weak and inefficient. This will give the enemy advantage over you. God would have you grow nearer and closer to Himself, to resemble the image and character of Christ. Your heart is the seat of many tumultuous feelings, which you do not strive vigorously to overcome. You do not put your full heart and will into the work of cleansing the soul temple. Your mind is unwisely exercised on the subject of divorce from your wife. God is not leading you in this. You are not keeping this matter bound within your own mind. You are telling your ideas and plans to others, and in thus doing you are preparing the way for Satan to affect the minds of others by your suggestions. "The matter of the marriage covenant does not stand sacred and elevated in your mind as it should, and you will be certainly in danger of pursuing a wrong course yourself, and endangering other souls by your suggestions. Your mind while stirred up on this subject cannot be prepared to do the best work, and you cannot be an earnest seeker for the blessing of the Lord, unless you shall come up on higher ground. You have done positive injury to the hearts and minds of others. Close quickly the door of your heart that has been open to the enemy. Open wide the door of your heart and invite Jesus to come in. You will then have a balance wheel to your somewhat erratic nature, that you can put your whole being into your work, realizing its importance. Improve every opportunity to work your way upward, exerting a firm and healthful influence. Lose no time in this matter. If you would be a free and happy man, you must resist the enemy."

Pamphlets #39, p 3-4
I have been shown several times of your danger and of your living far behind when you should be far in advance of what you now are. The responsibilities which encircle you are not appreciated and are not met; and in my dreams I am writing you the past testimonies that have been given me for you in the State of New York. God has given to you great light and precious opportunities for knowing his will and doing good. This neglect affects the person himself as well as others connected with him. It is not a praise-worthy act to decline responsibility, but it is a great dishonor to your Maker who has entrusted you with talents of means and of influence, which will constitute you channels of light to the world if you are faithful to your trust. All your powers given you of God are to be used. All the means which he has lent you is to be put to wise improvement, because you are not your own, you are bought with a price, and are trading upon entrusted capital. God requires you to put to improvement every gift lent you in trust. You are not to be far-reaching merely to get gain to yourself, to give you the power to do that which the world's Redeemer has told you not to do: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, for your heart will be upon your earthly treasures; but lay up for yourselves treasures in the heavens, in bags which wax not old.

Manuscript Releases, vol 20, p 71 (Manuscript Releases, vol 4, p 234)
Frank, I have been troubled by dreams on your account. I know that you will make decisions at once, decisions for time and eternity. You will not be long in deciding whether you will be the servant of Christ or the servant of Satan. May God help you to choose rightly. The loss of a soul is of more consequence than the loss of a world. You need religion. Religion comprises practice as well as faith; the regulations of the life as well as the rectification of the heart. No man can be a correct citizen without true piety --the strictest integrity combined with the purest devotion.

Pamphlets #155, p 1
Dear Brethren and Sisters in Battle Creek: My soul has been sadly burdened tonight. I have been unable to sleep, as I have been many nights, because of great distress for the cause of God and the church at Battle Creek. I thought when my work was done in writing out Testimony No. 31, I should then be free; but last night I was, in my dreams, in your meetings. I heard your testimonies; I felt your spirit. Some were humbling their souls before God. With confession and humiliation, they made their way out of the darkness, while Eld. Smith, Bro. McLearn, and Wm. Gage seemed to feel no spirit of confession; and these very men who had brought the church into difficulty, were not by their own course of action leading them out. I heard testimonies borne to have a soothing influence upon the people.

Manuscript Releases, vol 7, p 272-73
After a time I slept, and in my dreams I seemed to be listening to One who was bearing testimony before our brethren in responsible positions. The words He spoke were so decided and straight, that it seemed to some present as if His representations could not be true of all present. Some were deeply moved, while others were deeply mortified that their course of action should be presented as it was. This latter class had not a right comprehension of true religion. They had not been drinking deep draughts from the fountain of Christ's sympathy and tenderness and love. They had a low estimate of what the Christian life should be, and they were hurt and offended at the word spoken.

Manuscript Releases, vol 16, p 282 (1888 Materials, p 33; Manuscript Releases, vol 9, p 216, 325)
Had you avoided the question, which you state has been done, it would have been more in accordance with the light God has seen fit to give to me. I have had some impressive dreams (SEE TESTIMONIES FOR THE CHURCH, VOL. 5, PP. 571-573) that have led me to feel that you are not altogether in the light. Elder [D. M.] Canright was presenting his ideas upon the law, and such a mixed up concern I never heard. Neither of you seemed to see or understand where his arguments would lead to. (Letter 13, April 5, 1887, pp. 1,2--To Elders G.I. Butler and Uriah Smith).

Manuscript Releases, vol 21, p 303
My dear brethren, I write you these words as I was speaking them to you last night in my dreams. I am praying for the success of your effort in Marlborough. May the Lord give you an earnest spirit of prayer. I have feared that you would fail to come close enough to God to enable Him to do the work He is ready to do for you and through you. He cannot do this work unless you are hid with Christ in God, because self is prepared to take the glory God should have.

1888 Materials, p 1159-1160
A few nights since I was conversing with you in my dreams. You were worried and nervous. You were talking to your brother and then to someone else, and your words were not as kind and considerate and just as they should have been. Speaking to you as when you were a youth, I said, "John, you speak unadvisedly. How can you expect to save Willie's soul? You must watch for his soul as tenderly as you watch over the diseased bodies of your patients. Willie must have a chance to secure the insurance of his soul for eternal life in the kingdom of God. Jesus loves him; He died for him. Be very tender to Willie. The Lord will have mercy upon him and blot out every transgression if he will come to Him. His soul is precious."

Publishing Ministry, p 135 (Pamphlet #80, p 1-2; #146, p 16)
Less long, sweeping journeys across the continent, and more close investigation of the true inward working of the heart, are essential. The rooms in the office need inspection, that the things you know not, you may discern and search out. The temple of God must be cleansed, that His name shall not be dishonored by men who are not connected with Him. My heart is pained as, in my dreams, I am visited and appealed to by different ones placing the corruptions in the office of publication before me. I awaken to find it a dream, but know it to be the truth. My dear brother, the spirit of severity, of lording it over the ignorant and helpless, is being opened before me. In the place of the office being an educating school to prepare the youth to give their hearts to the Lord, the teachers and overseers, by their course of action, drive them onto Satan's battleground. It is not a place where the Lord Jesus is entertained as a heavenly Guest. Some of the overseers, and the workers under their supervision, give little time to thoughts of a high and holy order; the Lord is not glorified.--Lt 86, 1896.

PRINCIPLES:
--Those who are chosen by God to have dreams and visions are shown the sins, plans, and corruptions of various individuals which have been hidden from view--especially those individuals involved in important work in God's cause.

Manuscript Releases, vol 4, p 165-66 (Evangelism, p 503)
In my dreams last night I was speaking to a company of young men. I asked them to sing, "Almost Persuaded." Some present were deeply moved. I knew that they were almost persuaded, but that if they did not make decided efforts to return to Christ, the conviction of their sinfulness would leave them. You made some confessions, and I asked you, "Will you not from this time stand on the Lord's side?" If you will receive Jesus, He will receive you. "He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God." You need not be discouraged. Come to the Saviour, saying, "In my hand no price I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling." Letter 137, 1904.

Early Writings, p 78
I dreamed of seeing a temple to which many people were flocking. Only those who took refuge in that temple would be saved when time should close. All who remained outside would be forever lost. The multitudes without, who were going their various ways, were deriding and ridiculing those who were entering the temple, and told them that this plan of safety was a cunning deception, that, in fact, there was no danger whatever to avoid. They even laid hold of some to prevent them from hastening within the walls.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 03-21-99 (Manuscript Releases, vol 4, p 257)
As I awoke in the night, my soul was filled with a hungering and thirsting after righteousness; and in my dreams I was standing before many people, with great earnestness urging them to trust in God, to have increasing faith and confidence in Jesus; for in him all hope of eternal life is centered. He is the chiefest among ten thousand, and altogether lovely. In all our ways we should acknowledge him, and thank him for his manifold benefits. His angels, thousands upon thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand, are commissioned to minister to those who shall be heirs of salvation. They guard us against temporal evil, and press back the powers of darkness, to save us from destruction. If Satan had his way, and carried out his designs, destruction would be seen on every hand. Why is it that we do not value God's watch care? Why is it that we so seldom recount his mercies? Why is it that so little thanksgiving flows back to God? By our failure to express gratitude, we are dishonoring our Maker. Have we not reason to be thankful every moment? And should we not express our thankfulness, even when there are difficulties in our pathway?

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 03-21-99 (Manuscript Releases, vol 4, p 257-58)
When I awoke and looked out of the window, I saw two white clouds. Then I fell asleep again; and in my dreams these words were spoken to me: "Look at these clouds. It was just such clouds as these that enshrouded the heavenly host who proclaimed to the shepherds the birth of the world's Redeemer." I awoke and looked out of the car window again, and there were the two large white clouds, as white as snow. They were distinct, separate clouds, but one would approach and touch the other, and for a moment they would blend together; then they would separate, and remain as distinct as before. They did not disappear, but continued in sight throughout the forenoon. At twelve o'clock we changed cars, and I did not see the clouds any more.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 02-04-02
In the night season I was in my dreams in a large meeting, with ministers, their wives, and their children. I wondered that the company present was mostly made up of ministers and their families. The prophecy of Malachi was brought before them in connection with Daniel, Zephaniah, Haggai, and Zechariah. The teaching of these books was carefully investigated. The building of the temple, and the temple service, were considered. There was close searching of the Scriptures in regard to the sacred character of all that appertained to the temple service. Through the prophets, God has given a delineation of what will come to pass in the last days of this earth's history; and the Jewish economy is full of instruction for us.

The Youth's Instructor, 05-01-56
One night I had pleasant dreams all through the night. I dreamed of exhorting the people, with much freedom. In the morning I awoke free from pain. I was strongly impressed that the angel of the Lord had touched me while I was sleeping, and I was made whole. I have been free since. An entire change has taken place.

Manuscript Releases, vol 1, p 328
That night in my dreams I seemed to be making plans in regard to this property. One spoke to me and said, "How were you impressed with this location?" I replied, "Favorably; but I do not see how we can purchase; we have not the means. We might lessen the price by selling the stone winery."

Manuscript Releases, vol 19, p 271-272
In my dreams I am writing books and calculating for their publication. "The Life of Christ" has dragged along a long time, because I have not had time to write on these things as I should. I am seeking counsel of God in order to know what to do. I have labored more earnestly for the churches than I have this past year, so I have no hesitancy in taking the same salary that I have in the past. In addition to all the labor that I have mentioned, I have also borne testimonies that have been very taxing to me, and have also had much work to do in feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and in paying laborers who are employed in the cause. At the present time I am paying $19 per week in sustaining laborers in Ashfield, Petersham, and Canterbury. In no period of my labors has there been so great a draft upon my financial and spiritual resources as at the present. How long my resources will admit of this constant drain I am unable to say; but I am looking to Him whose resources are unlimited to supply every lack.

Manuscript Releases, vol 21, p 249
I begin to feel burden to bear my testimony in the East. In dreams I am before the people there, talking with great power and my testimony affecting hearts. What my future is I cannot tell. I wait and watch and pray and the Lord will teach. He will lead and guide me. I want to walk in all humility of mind and walk in His love and in His fear, laboring for souls as they [who] must give an account. My heart cries out daily for the living God. I want my heart stayed upon God continually.

Manuscript Releases, vol 21, p 249-250
I feel sure that there have been feelings and motives at work in this matter which God has nothing to do with, if my dreams are correct. Time will reveal what now is not so plain. But no more call will be made to those who have been mentioned. God will send by whom He will. The cause is His. The work is His. If any one has been held back from answering to the Spirit of God in their movements, I am sorry, but we leave this matter for God to settle.

Manuscript Releases, vol 21, p 313
In my dreams I am with Sister Ings. She fell on my neck and said, "Oh, Sister White, I never wanted to leave you. You made me leave you, and I want to be with you. The Lord blesses me when I am with you." I said, "Sister Ings, from this time our interests shall never be divorced. We will stand shoulder to shoulder to the close of time.

1888 Materials, p 965
The dreams I have had are very striking. One I had while on the boat, and one since coming to Sidney. We need to be very guarded as to how we place responsibilities upon any man who has once betrayed sacred trusts. Somehow I felt like writing this.

Spalding and Magan Collection, p 104
I was a few nights since in my dreams in conversation with the teachers in the school or chapel room. I was speaking to the teachers and said, "I have a message for you." and in substance I presented that which I now write. I was speaking to the teachers in regard to their responsibility of being at all times under the control of the Spirit of God. I repeated these words, "Abide in me, and I in you." "As the branch can not bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me." "I am the vine, ye are the branches; he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."

PRINCIPLES:
--Dreams and visions from God are mainly for the instruction of other souls, and not just for the instruction of the one having them; and the instruction for the others souls is always based upon Scripture truth.
--Dreams and visions from the Lord are almost always related to the cause of God and His church.

Let us now review all the principles relating to dreams and visions which we have already read in this study:

GUIDING PRINCIPLES REGARDING DREAMS and VISIONS

"We must be as true as steel to principle, standing steadfastly against every species of corruption. It is this steadfast adherence to principle that is to distinguish those who bear the seal of the living God from those who have the mark of the beast." Manuscript Releases, vol 4, p 76.

In every sphere of action they (those who fear God) work on the principles that God accepts.

1888 Materials, p 1731
We need men who will stand as true to principle as the needle to the pole. God will test the men who are given responsibilities in His work, and unless they show that they have a true idea of what Christlike principles are, He will remove them and put others in their place. God wants us to know what it means to work on the principles of heaven.

Signs of the Times, 03-23-91
...the judgment must be matured before the taste, principle must be cultivated before fancy and inclination. After true principles are established, and the character is given balance, the taste may be indulged, and the fancy may be disciplined. The mind that is filled with wisdom, and established in principle, will be symmetrical, and will have the inward adorning that is of great price in the sight of God.

Review and Herald, 12-14-05
He who remains true to principle will never be left by the Lord to become weak and discouraged.

Review and Herald, 01-16-00
True brotherhood can never be maintained by compromising principle....At this crisis is the time to decide who are God's faithful servants, who will be true to principle, who will bear in mind that truth is too dearly purchased for its least principle to be surrendered....On points of feeling between man and man, concessions should sometimes be made; but never should one iota of principle be sacrificed to obtain harmony.

Manuscript Releases, vol 1, p 216
So few are found who act upon the principles of the Bible, that we can say indeed that many shall seek to enter in and shall not be able. Christ's followers are a little flock.

Signs of the Times, 05-02-00
Christ's true followers will act upon the principles He has laid down.

Signs of the Times, 11-30-88
The Lord cannot use men and women in his service, in any branch of his work, unless they possess a meek and teachable spirit. Those whom God employs in his service must be true to principle...They must seek to be conformed to his will and his ways, and not seek to have their own will and way. He who would become a living channel of light, must be governed by something more than habit or opinion. He must live hourly in conscious communion with God. His life must be brought into contact with the principles of truth and righteousness. He must become a partaker of divine nature.

That I May Know Him, p 352
Is this the time for Seventh-day Adventists to lose their faith and grow cold and formal? God forbid! Shall we turn traitor at the very moment when God would be most glorified by our steadfast adherence to principle?

Education, p 50
Adherence to the principles of God's word will bring as great blessings to us as it would have brought to the Hebrew people.

Counsels on Education, p 34
The young should be controlled by firm principle, that they may rightly improve the powers which God has given them. But youth follow impulse so much and so blindly, without reference to principle, that they are constantly in danger. Since they cannot always have the guidance and protection of parents and guardians, they need to be trained to self-reliance and self-control. They must be taught to think and act from conscientious principle.

Counsels on Diet and Foods, p 63
It is principle that is wanted, firm principle, and vigor of action in spiritual as well as temporal things.

Testimonies, vol 1, p 690
Dear Brother B: I was shown that you move much from feeling instead of from firm principle.

Testimonies, vol 2, p 553-554
The experience of some had been obtained among a class of religious fanatics who had no true sense of the exalted character of the work. The religious experience of this class of professed Seventh-day Adventists was not reliable. They had not firm principles underlying all their actions....These persons had no love for union and harmony of action....They were a curse to the cause of God and brought the name of Seventh-day Adventists into disrepute.

In Heavenly Places, p 199
Satan and evil angels have conspired with evil men and evil women, and the whole energies of the powers of darkness will gather themselves together to lead astray and destroy every soul that is not garrisoned with firm principles of eternal truths.

Testimonies, vol 4, p 444
They do not know their place and keep it. They are not balanced by firm principles. They talk knowingly of things they know nothing of, and hence those who accept them as teachers are misled. One such person will inspire more skepticism in minds than several will be able to counteract, do the best they can.
