Lesson 19
THE NEW COVENANT CEREMONIES
Introduction: In this lesson we will study the interrelationship between the Old and New Testament. They are teaching the same thing. They are not in conflict. It is the message of the plan of salvation through the life and death of Jesus. In the Old Testament, the Passover lamb pointed to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, while in the New Testament, the Lord’s Supper was instituted as a reminder of His sacrifice after it was made.
First let us study the events as they occurred, and then we can go deeper.
1. What special occasion was being observed? Matt. 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13.

Note: It was Christ’s last chance while He was yet with His disciples, to instruct them and try to prepare them for what was about to happen. He had selected a large upper room in a home where they could meet by themselves. The Bible does not tell us in whose home it was, but they must have been able to use the room for more than that one night, for it seems it could have been the same room where they stayed after the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. See Acts 1:12-14. So although we do not know the man’s name, he will be remembered for his willingness and hospitality.
But the disciples were not ready. They were not in a state of mind for spiritual blessing. Their thoughts and desires were on temporal things. But Jesus had so much that He wanted to share with them that night. Their thoughts needed to be redirected in spiritual channels. How could Jesus do this?
2. After eating the Passover meal, what did Jesus do? John 13:2-5.

7. What did Jesus tell them to show that the service was not only to be a reminder of what He had done for them, but also to keep in their minds that He was coming again? Matt. 26:29; Mark 14:25; Luke 22:16. See also 1 Cor. 11:26.

9. In the Old Testament Passover service what represented Christ’s body? 1 Cor. 5:7; John 1:29; Isa. 53:7.

Note: God taught the children of Israel the plan of salvation and pointed them to the coming of Jesus to live and die for them, to pay the penalty for their sins. He did it through the system of ceremonies and sacrifices. Then Jesus came as the Sacrificial Lamb of God and fulfilled that part of His mission. Then these ceremonies and sacrifices were no longer necessary, for the event they had pointed to had been fulfilled. Before He returned to heaven, Jesus instituted another service which was to be a memorial of what He was about to do, and also pointed forward to the time when He would come again and take His faithful ones home.
10. a) What is the New Testament counterpart? Matt. 26:26; Mark 14:22; Luke 22:19.
b) What did it accomplish? Heb. 10:10; 1 Pet. 2:24; John 6:47,48, 51, 33-35.

11. In the Passover and sacrificial system that ended at the cross, what was the purpose of the blood? Rom. 3:23-26.
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Note: It represented Jesus’ blood which is shed for the remission of our sins (1 Pet. 1:18-20). The life of the flesh is in the blood (Lev. 17:11,14). Jesus gave His life, shed His blood for the remission of our sins.
12. What is the New Testament counterpart? Matt. 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20.

13. What does the actual shedding of Jesus’ blood do for the world? John 3:16; 6:54; Acts 20:28; Rom. 5:9; Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14; Heb. 9:22; 1 Pet. 1:18,19; 1 John 1:7; Rev. 7:14; 12:11.

Note: These references show that the blood of Jesus gives eternal life, we are purchased by His blood, we are justified, forgiven, purged, redeemed, cleansed, washed, and enabled to overcome. “Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift!” 2 Cor. 9:15.
14. What word is sometimes used interchangeably with “bread” and “flesh” when referring to Jesus? John 1:1,14.
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Note: Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:48), and the Word of Life. He is also “the Light of the world” (John 8:12; 1 John 1:5). Therefore, by accepting and partaking of Jesus and His sacrifice for us, and studying diligently and prayerfully, or partaking of His word, we will not be in darkness, and we can be the light of the world (Matt. 5:14), pointing men and women to Jesus and His sacrifice for us, and His soon coming.
