In our past two Newsletters, we examined the issue of how to overcome sin and become perfect through Christ. We clearly saw that perfection of character is indeed possible and attainable--but only through union with Christ. Yet Christ will not do this work for us--it is a combination of faith and works. This then leads us to examine the last in this series on Salvation through Truth, or Doctrinal Suicide--or the Issue of the Human Will.

The main point at stake with this issue is that since sin is a choice, must we exert the will power to resist sinning, or will Christ overcome the sin for us? Most all of the churches of Babylon downplay the idea of the human will being used to overcome sin, and strongly teach that Christ has already overcome sin for us, so there is no need to put forth any will power or efforts to combat sin.

Their theological "learned" men teach that any person who attempts to use their will in putting forth efforts to overcome sin, are therefore not finding rest in Christ, and thus will end up defeated. So, they declare, there is no need to control ourselves or attempt to live a life like Christ, because it is impossible for us to do so--and that is why it is all of grace and by faith alone! And this includes the S.D.A. church and its theological leaders!

"The gospel is not doing something in order to make ourselves better. It is not reforming ourselves, using our will power to stop bad habits...this is not the gospel....Its good news: not that we should do something for God...it is salvation by faith...'Its all of Grace.'" Voice of Prophecy News, February, 1976, p 6, H.M.S. Richards, Sr.

"Many people accept the premise that justification is by faith alone, but find it hard to turn loose of the idea that there is something we can do to save ourselves in the process of sanctification. Some consider it dangerous to give up the idea that the method of living the Christian life is by faith plus works....If we put our effort and our will-power toward that which is impossible for us to do [keep God's commandments and overcome sin], then we will end in defeat." Faith That Works, p 188.

"If we are sinners, and cannot produce genuine obedience apart from God, then all we can do regarding ourselves is to surrender ourselves--give up on the idea that we can ever produce genuine obedience....We will never be just like Jesus....Jesus must do all of this [overcome our sins, obey God, and produce righteousness] for us." Faith That Works, p 168-72.

So our will is the power or force in our natures. We can choose to do something all day long, but it will not be accomplished until we act upon our choice. The power to perform the action in harmony with our choice is accomplished by the force of our will. Thus the will plays a most vital and important part in our daily lives. This can be easily understood from the following example.

Picture an electrical fan which has only two switch positions--one to blow air outward, and the other to suck air inward. You can choose all day long to have the fan moving the air one way or the other, but until it has the needed electricity to power it, the fan blade will not move at all. The same with us. We can choose to perform either a positive or a negative action, but until our will powers the action in harmony with our choice, we will not move at all. Thus in using our will power, we would be DOING something by putting forth ACTION, EFFORT, WORK, LABOR, etc., to accomplish our choice and desire. So in order to move at all, the will must be set to work. Thus you can clearly see that we are constantly using our will in every action of our daily lives. From the time when we wake up in the morning until we fall asleep at night, we are constantly using our will to act upon our choices and decisions. Therefore our lives are made up from the different choices WE make and the actions WE perform! When we continually choose to repeat a certain action we begin to form a habit, and our characters will be made up according to the particular habits we form. Therefore we become exactly what we choose ourselves to be. And, to the Christian, it means everything to be able to spend eternity close beside our King and our merciful Saviour. That is why "everything depends on the right action of the will."

Christ tells us in Luke 13:24 that we are to "strive to enter in at the straight gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able." The Greek word for "strive" is #75, and it means to "struggle, fight, labor fervently, to contend with an adversary". So why were the majority not able to enter in through the gate and obtain eternal life? Because they either did not strive or struggle with the adversary at all, or they gave up the struggle too soon! They did not continue to fight and contend with the enemy of our souls, but gave up the warfare and joined him!

Jude tells us that we must "contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3). The Greek word for "contend" is #1864, and it means to "struggle for". So here again, God is telling His people that they must strive, contend, struggle, fight, labor fervently against the sins which so easily beset us in order to keep the true Gospel faith as it is in Jesus and obtain eternal life. Thus our will must be used in this fight, struggle, and contending for the faith--because without the will, no struggling or contending can occur.

God created you and I to represent Him, not just in outward appearance, but especially in character! (see Patriarchs and Prophets, p 45). But because of Adam's sin, human nature fell and became sinful, full of evil lusts and desires, with a strong inward driving inclination to continue on sinning. Thus when faced with a temptation, our fallen nature, with all its evil desires and inclinations, exerts an almost overpowering desire to give in to that temptation and commit sin, while our conscience is telling us to resist the temptation and do good. Hence a war builds within us either to give in and commit sin or to resist and follow the will of God. Which means that we are forced to use our will in walking whatever pathway we decide to follow. But what makes this fact even more difficult, is that after the fall, our will was given into Satan's control!

So with Satan having the mastery over our will, and with man's fallen nature exerting an almost overpowering urge and desire to sin, we certainly would stand no chance of overcoming sin. We would continue to lack enough strength and power on our own, to stand against temptation, and we would continually find ourselves yielding to temptation and choosing sin even though we didn't want to. Paul says this very thing in Romans 7:18-19, 22-24.

Is there any hope for the human race under these conditions? No, we would continue to be the servants of sin and remain under bondage to the devil. All the good things that we would do; all our righteousness would be as filthy rags to God. Satan would continue to claim us as his own, and he would be our master and father.

Then where could humanity look for help out of this dark pit of despair? The New Age teaches that we need to look within for the power to escape this pit of despair and become like God. But the Bible states that the only thing we will find if we look within is only evil continually (Genesis 6:5; Jeremiah 17:9). The advocates of the New World Order declare that humanity must look to each other and their community for the collective consciousness and power to escape the pit of despair and become like God. But the Bible states that we would be cursed and the enemies of God if we trusted to the arm of flesh (Jeremiah 17:5; James 4:4). The apostate churches teach that humanity must look to them for the power to escape the pit of despair and become like God. But the Bible teaches that if humanity trusts their salvation to the polluted church, they will be destroyed along with their sinful church (Micah 2:10; Isaiah 52:11; Revelation 18:1-4).

"The result of the eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is manifest in the every man's experience. There is in his nature a bent to evil, a force which, unaided he cannot resist. To withstand this force, to attain that ideal which his inmost soul he accepts as alone worthy, he can find help in but one power. That power is Christ." Education, p 29.

After the fall, our will was bent downward toward evil. Thus our only hope of salvation is from God. But God cannot just pardon man and his sin, because it would prove the penalty to be useless, and sin would be allowed to live forever. The only way to break Satan's claim and bondage upon us and save humanity, would be for a son of the human race to choose to live his entire life without sinning. To continually war, struggle, and fight against the almost overpowering desire and lusts of a fallen human nature; to continually force his will to overcome all temptations, relying upon God for help, and then to walk in the path of humble obedience to God's commands perfectly. This is the only way to break Satan's control over our will and his claim upon us, because it would then prove that the law of God is holy, just and good, and that it could be obeyed perfectly by humanity. There is no other way for man's salvation and freedom from the bondage of Satan and sin! And who is this son of the human race which would volunteer to engage in this seemingly impossible task? Jesus Christ!

God, our merciful and blessed Father, gave His only begotten Son to become bone of our bone, and flesh of our flesh; to be our Substitute, our Surety and Sacrifice for sin; to wrestle with and overcome the strong foe. And, as we discovered earlier, Christ overcame all sin through a fallen, sinful human nature with sinful flesh.

Christ suffered by being tempted. Now why would Christ suffer by being tempted if He had the unfallen nature of man? Can God be tempted to do evil? No (see James 1:13). Yet Christ was tempted to do evil. Then in what nature did Christ have to be living in to be tempted and to suffer by these temptations? He had to be living in a fallen, sinful human nature.

The suffering that Christ experienced when tempted was by Him fighting against it and using all the power of His being in grabbing hold of His will, forcing it upward to resist and overcome the clamors of a fallen nature, choosing instead to follow the will of God in all things and doing the will of God perfectly. Thus Christ crucified self; He denied the downward inclinations of a fallen nature, and this caused internal suffering, but gained the victory over the temptation.

Christ did not commit sin to obtain our fallen nature, but He took it upon Himself in order to endure the same strong inward inclinations of the fallen nature; and He overcame them all--being our perfect example in all things. Thus He can indeed help us overcome these same downward inclinations in every time of need!

When we choose to follow the example of our Saviour, and yield our wills unto God, resisting the clamors of a sinful nature by doing the will of God, we too will experience internal suffering as self is crucified and Jesus is revealed through us instead! But this suffering means that we are gaining the victory over that sin and thus perfecting our characters through the grace and strength of Christ. So if we find ourselves suffering in the flesh, then sin has been refused; but if we do not suffer by crucifying self, then sin is retained.

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." 1 Peter 4:1-2, 5:8-11.

Indeed may everlasting praise be given to God! And may everlasting praise be given to Jesus because He was willing to humble Himself in taking our sinful nature upon Him so that He would be acquainted with all the internal struggles against sin which are common to us all, and to know from personal experience how strong are these inclinations of the natural heart and thus be able to help us in every time of our need! Oh, may we fully comprehend this vital and solemn truth and then come boldly to the throne of grace, knowing that we will find the help in Christ that we need to overcome every temptation and resist every sin! (Hebrews 4:16).

Christ has made us free from the power of the devil and sin, setting us a perfect example of how we can also overcome sin and perfect our own characters in righteousness. And we can! But we must surrender ourselves to God, being daily converted unto Him, and we must understand the power of the will.

Since it is through the will that the stronghold of sin is found in us, then the reverse of this is also true: that it is through the will that the stronghold of righteousness is also to be found! Therefore knowing how to yield our will unto God and forcing our body to perform God's will in walking the pathway of righteousness would break sin's strangle-hold upon us! And if we continually forced our will to do God's good pleasure, then instead of our will being the stronghold of sin, it would become the stronghold of righteousness!

As we reported earlier, this Ministry is engaged in two massive and aggressive evangelistic projects. To-date, over 50,000 of our booklets have been printed up, and nearly 40,000 of these have already been mailed out to various Countries around the world! Also to-date, we have printed over 250,000 of our tracts, and over 150,000 of these have already been folded and mailed out around the world. This means that over 75 big boxes of materials, weighing 30+ pounds each, have already been mailed overseas to be distributed by our workers!

We are so deeply grateful and humbled to know that God is allowing us a small part in His great work of spreading the present truth gospel message of salvation in and through Jesus Christ! May we all realize that each one of us have our own part to play in the spreading of God's truth to others, and thus we all have something to do in lighting this dark world with God's glory. Oh, brothers and sisters, let us be about and doing the work of our Master--Jesus Christ, for the night is coming on fast when we can no longer work.

We have just completed a new study which has already been printed up in booklet form. The title of this booklet is "God's True Church". This booklet is designed to be an evangelistic outreach tool to non-Adventists--but even Adventists can be benefited by it. This booklet clearly reveals from the Bible that God's true church is not the great Cathedrals, neither is it the various religious establishments, organizations or institutions. But God's true church is the people who love God and keep His commandments. This booklet is a must for all who believe that their established church or denomination holds, in some way, the key to their salvation--even if only in part.

It is called "Tidings of Hope", and is published by pastor Nelson Criswell of Word of Hope Ministries in West Virginia. Each Quarterly covers a different book of the Bible, each chapter is then listed, and only Spirit of Prophecy quotations are given pertaining to the verse or subject of each Bible chapter. While most of these visitors were from America, we also had visitors from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, and the United Kingdom. All our visitors downloaded over 12,700 files, which totalled 603,110,000 bits of information!

In June, we had 15,280 hits, which were generated by 3,072 visitors, who stayed an average of 11:57 minutes each! In these Visitor Sessions, 4,937 documents of Present Truth were viewed. Again, while most of these were from America, there were also visitors from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom! Over 12,900 files were downloaded from our Web Site, which totaled 617,483,000 bits of information!

In the Month of July, we had 17,584 hits, which were generated by 3,593 visitors, who stayed an average of 17:25 minutes each! In these Visitor Sessions, 6,221 documents of Present Truth were viewed. Again, while most of these were from America, there were also visitors from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, France, Hong Kong, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe. All our visitors downloaded over 13,900 files, which totaled 770,365,000 bits of information! So the combined total for these past three months is that over 1.99 billion bits of information were downloaded from our Present Truth Web Site by over 10,000 visitors! Many of you have received an invitation letter for unity, and a booklet explaining the platform of truth upon which this unity is based. We have read these, and agree whole-heartedly with every aspect of the platform of truth expressed, as well as with the concept of the unity put forth.

But because of the word of God, we (my brothers and I) were sacked from (forced to leave) our own parents house. The reason is that, on 14th of March 2001, our younger brother fell sick and we told our father to send him to hospital or to a pastor for prayers, but my father recently said that the gods will heal our brother. Because he is the man who will enter our village Shrine first, he believed in those spirits. And three days after the sickness it became worst and worst, but my father refused to take him to a prayer camp. So, on 18th our beloved brother pass away. This make us very angry. So one Saturday we went to church at ____. So this made our father angry because he warn us not to go to church. So he sacked us from the house. But we know there is a living God.

So we decided to be studying a Bible, but where to get money. So when we got an address from China we write a letter, but they returned it. So when we went to church on 31st March they gave us a booklet and they write an address on it. So we decided to write to you and your Ministries, so that you will send us some Bibles to be studying. (Editor's note: Bibles, including Bible Readings for the Home, have already been sent.)

Thank you ever so much for the Newsletter which is very-spiritually informative. It truly guides my life as a "rod" whatever I do, and wherever I go. Yes, we must focus our eyes/mind to Jesus for He is the only anchor of our soul. Temptations surround us but as long as we are on the SOLID ROCK, we shall not fret.

Enclosed herewith, please find my tithe and offering to help you in the gospel proclamation as time is getting now shorter. Every minute counts to the imminent return of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Am sure your untiring effort in this ministry will continue to provide present truth or additional oil for Christians to make them get ready to meet the Bridegroom. Brother Sessler, in the book Desire of Ages, page 216 (257-258) (it says:) "In the days of Christ the leaders and teachers of Israel were powerless to resist the work of Satan. They were neglecting the only means by which they could have withstood evil spirits. It was by the word of God that Christ overcame the wicked one. The leaders of Israel professed to be the expositors of God's word but they had studied it only to sustain their traditions, and enforce their man-made observances...

"History is repeating. With the open Bible before them, and professing to reverence its teachings, many of the religious leaders of our time are destroying faith in it as the word of God. They busy themselves with dissecting the word, and set their own opinions above its most plainest statements. In their hands God's word loses its regenerating power."

Thanks for the March/April Newsletter, "How to Overcome Temptation and Sin." In time like these, truly you are being used by the Holy Spirit, to bring about these series of topics you've been addressing (Editor's note: God deserves all the praise and credit for condescending to use such an unprofitable servant as myself--Luke 17:10). It's a must for true followers of Christ to completely understand, if we will inherit eternity....

Because he has been telling them the truth, they (SDA) church do not allow him to preach in their pulpits. He is known for his no nonsense attitude and straight talking. He is a worker and he lived what he preached. We are fortunate indeed to have a good brother such as ____ to have joined us....

Last week I was in the ____ Home church where three girls from Fulton College (SDA) school joined us in our church services....The girls were very happy to hear the message and they also agreed that they were hearing the truth. We shared the words of God together and told us what is going on in the school and the SDA church. We gave them booklets, tracts and some other materials and they promised they will be visiting us again. They spent the whole Sabbath with us and I praised God for it.

We have been experiencing a very big change in our weather here in Fiji. Usually when we have cold nights, it means that we should have a very hot sunny day next morning, but instead we are having rain for the past three to four weeks. It has restricted my movements. However this does not stop me from doing my normal work.

I have received the disks for those translated booklets in Fijian in the mail, and I also received booklets "Jeremiah" and I thank you very much for it. The Fijian translation of "Jeremiah" is now with the printers for printing. I did some more checking on the booklets and also some corrections and adjustments. I am still working on the Golden Calf Apostasy translation.

Two weeks ago I was turned away from ____ Prison...One of the reason was because of our booklets, both in English and Fijian, are doing well with inmates. Another reason is the SDA (church) has a senior officer working in this Prison. The Prison authority has given him the authority to control all visitation and he is working closely with the SDA church to control and screen everyone that goes in to the prison. I know the Lord will open that place for us, we maybe down at the moment but not out.

Greetings from Hong Kong. Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm pleased to let you know that sister ____ has just responded and told me that she left the big church (SDA) a few years ago and she is now working as a house keeper. On Sabbath, she meets with her sister and a few friends in the part or sometimes at home. She enjoys reading your booklets and would like to share this present truth with her friends....

Regarding my computer...The renting service is not available here. I suggest that if you can find one cheaper in the States, of course loaded with licensed softwares (of) Word 97 or 2000 and Richwin 97 or 2000 with OS of windows 98 or Me, then please send it to me as soon as possible. I need it badly for input (of Chinese characters) now. The figures I quoted in my last mail was in HK dollars (about $1100 US).

I thank God for the development we could see in our Indian ministry. We are receiving many enquiries to know our messages. Last Sabbath brother ____ came from ____ the ____ city of ____ and participated with our Sabbath worship. He is a leading layman in SDA church in ____ city. He is having a small group in ____ consisting of 30 souls. From this coming Sabbath onwards we will be having one more home church at ____ city.

Next to this I have received a letter from ____ state (a) brother ____ who is a church pastor of SDA church in ____ state. He had resigned his job three years back itself. He has written letter to me that in his area many of the SDA churches are closed and he is doing his lay evangelical work among this scattered souls of SDA church. I sent all our booklets and answers for his questions. He is fully convinced and willing to meet me in person in ____. Here I give them thorough study of the present truth and our reformation messages. When they are convinced they go back to their home town and gather the souls and teach them what we have taught....

Another person from ____ has also contacted me for starting the ministry in his home town. I have sent our booklets to him also. If it is God's will in next month of ____ I will be conducting camp-meetings in these places of ____, ____, and ____ state. Please pray for all these meetings to realize the presence of God....

Let us thank God for brother ____ from ____ state has arrived this morning. He has agreed and accepted already our separation message and took his stand with us through his letter (of resignation from the roll books). He is taking with him all our booklets for translation in...(Kannadam) language...

Results of work done will be better assessed soon. Silent studies that have been going on, booklets and tracts read are now causing a big shaking in the GC churches. At hand, I have a letter from the E.A. (East Africa) Union sent to a church elder in a local church around my residence here to discipline and contain an "offshoot element"...

In ____ where we were during the week of 20-27th May, a whole church stands to be ex-communicated as an offshoot for demanding to be told plainly the truth through the Bible and SOP why things are taking Pentecostal trend (in the church). Brother unite with us in prayers for brethren struggling to cut loose from the bonds of the GC (EW 241-42)....

I would like to first apologize for taking too long to write my reports. I had the above verse to share with many other brothers and sisters. Who is a "Jew" referred to in this text (we believe that the SDA church leadership is today following in the same footsteps, and thus can represent the Jew in this verse)? We had shared this verse with brethren here, (and) it had been and is being an answer to many, as compared with Rev 2:9; 3:9. And the cases of lawsuits (bringing brethren to the state courts) was clear...and many (other wicked) fruits borne by the SDA's because a clear-cut (proof) that the message of "separation" is the only "voice of God" at this point.

The (Namibian) president already said, "Christianity is foreign, and he does not recognize this." In one issue of Radio news it was said the Country will have only one (recognized) religion. Keep in mind, that there is already a political, pope representative (here); the Labour Act already recognize Sunday; the Municipality already have fines of N$2000.00 or 6 months imprisonment for working on Sunday. For this I bequest prayers for these brethren that God may prepare them to meet the emergency and vindicate the law of God. Many are reaching out to many different denominations and the work is taking root and many are seeing what is going on....

Anyway heres the translation of the booklet entitled, "Why Are We Held Accountable..." Thanks God for helping me finished this. Though there are some words hard to translate into Tagalog, but God still helped and gave me the right words to be used. I am praying that God continue to use me in this kind of work, and to continue increase and develop my talents.

I am presently in ____....I am scheduled to go to ____ this weekend. I've been informed that the layman we've shared some studies with wants to meet with us and that he and some people who have separated from the SDA church...are willing to listen to more studies from us. They need more of your translated booklets...

How are you doing?...Take courage, Bob, do not despair, everything is moving nicely. Nothing beclouds my vision in the work of separation. I have not changed an inch in my commitment, I am gaining more victories. I am rejoicing our booklets are doing silent work. A great harvest awaits our efforts. I am writing this to you out of the deep joy of my heart, and in full assurance of future glory....

On the Sabbath past 9 June, I discovered the French booklet "Jeremie" (among the boxes already received from the post office). For a long time I had waited to received it....It is a good work. I read it through. There was not a least printing error. I am actively visiting and placing them among S.D.A. members....

Now, there is a problem with (the) booklet "Golden Calf Apostasy". In Exodus chapter 32:4, it is stated "THESE BY THY GODS O ISRAEL". Upon this declaration you made a strong and conclusive explanation. These booklet is working to awake the churches. In the French Bible, "These be thy gods," is rather in singular form--"Voici ton dieu O Israel". This the S.D.A. leaders seized (upon) as evidence that we are twisting the Bible quotations just to discredit the church. There is a strong campaign against the booklets. There are speculation that, the quotations in our booklets were outside E.G. White writings. Praise God many of the quotations are found in the few E.G. White books in French. But the more the leaders try to destroy (the booklets and truth, the more people are awakened to study for themselves)....I am confident that truth shall triumph over error. Satan works only to destroy or discourage God's instrument of work. But praise God, He knows all Satan's tricks....

I thank those whom God has given a large heart, to step out and help the poor & helpless (in this time of need). May our heavenly (Father) bless those dear souls....

From the 1st of June (we) were locked out from the place we have for a long time used as our Chapel, but God in mercy got us a place on (a) temporal basis. We held our 1st meeting on the 9th. So upon such temporal conditions we earnestly pray that something be done for the advancement of the Lord's work in purchase of a place.

Sure time has come when God is revealing all the good and precious knowledge of (to) the heavenly saints. The book of Revelation and Daniel, as well as saint John, are becoming more and more sweet. The prophecies and writings in them are today's daily activity (being seen fulfilling around us). Praise God.

I want to praise God for the wonderful and encouraging thing which took place in ____. A company and a branch of all about 60 members of SDA churches organized themselves with all the necessities for a one week Revival meeting in (police) chief ____'s area of ____ in ____. These people wanted to hear why and what message was it of separation since, according to their leaders in the churches, the SDA church is the only Remnant Church.

Elder ____, elder ____ and I were called (upon) to give Biblical and SOP proofs over these messages. Blessed by the Love of God because after this week of series of Bible studies, the all two groups have decided to pack up their bags (and separate from the SDA church)! At present these people are struggling to see their names pulled off from the church rolls.

Thank you too for the prayers you are offering for us, because it was not easy to hold up this meeting because of the great opposition from the church and as well as from the civic powers, cause we had no authority to hold up a public gathering. It is (un)lawful in Zambia for people, more than 10, to gather without a police permit. It was through God's mercy that the chief for this area allowed us (to meet without a permit).

Now since this has been done...the numbers (of people coming to our meetings) is becoming big every time. The SDA leaders are now even more annoyed with us three and a lot is being said and planned over us. Thank you God because I am not ashamed of the truth, for Jesus is our Guide. UL, p 242, Psalms 125:1-3. Continue praying for us because the message has reached its own time, no one can stop it and it has to go whether people will like it or not.

Elder since the ice has broken, we can not swim under the ocean anymore. Besides, we have a big number of requests for the same mission....Henceforth, we still remind the brethren all over the world to consider our requests to help us speed up this gospel before the night draws nigh. Unfortunately enough we (do not) have a good second hand generator (but can buy one for) @ $200 and we need $250 to repair our motorbike.
