In the first part of this series on Hell, Death, and the Afterlife we learned that the Babylonians, whose religious beliefs began along with the formation of the tower of Babel just after the flood, believed that when a person died, they did not simply rest in the grave, but their immortal spirit went down to a subterranean retreat called Hell. Hell to them was a place of darkness, shadows, horror; a place which was ruled over by the god of fire and destruction and his brutal wife; and was a place where hideous looking demons could sadistically assault and torture the living dead at any time.

We further learned that the hell of the Bible does not mean such a fiery place deep beneath the earth where the immortal dead are supposedly tortured. But both the Old Testament and New Testament clearly teach that hell simply means a place underneath the surface of the earth where those who have experienced death rest in their graves.

In the second part of this series, we learned that death is similar to being asleep, only that there is no consciousness after we are dead. So we have no thoughts, memories or other mental processes while in the grave; we do not see or praise the Lord, nor do we see our loved ones, or enemies, or any other being, after we die. We also do not go to heaven or hell after we die, but simply rest in the grave. This is because all mankind is mortal, and therefore do not possess any immortal spark or immortal soul or spirit.

With this true Biblical understanding we also discovered that all supposed ghosts or spirits of the dead or other apparitions cannot be the actual dead person’s spirit, but are nothing more than evil spirits of the Devil pretending to be the dead come back to life.

But this truth of there being a chance for life after death through Christ is a great comfort and blessing for those who are still alive, but what about those who have already died? Will those who have already passed away or fallen asleep and are now resting in their graves ever be brought back to life again – including those who had rejected Christ?

The question about whether there is really life after death has been pondered by multitudes over the millennia. The desire to know the answer has led many far and wide in searching for the truth. Especially can this desire burn in the hearts of those who are grieving over the loss of loved ones. But where can they go to find the answer, knowing for certain that it is the truth, and thus find the lasting comfort they long so much to have?

The Apostle Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18, describes a time when the dead will really be with the Lord, and then he concludes as follows, “Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” So it is by looking in God’s inspired Scripture that all who have lost loved ones can find lasting and true comfort because it is there revealed that there will indeed be life after death.

In fact, in 1 Corinthians 15:12-13 we are told that if there is no such thing as life after death, then Jesus could not have been raised from the dead. So the very fact that God raised up Jesus from the tomb is our assurance that we also will be raised if we should die! “Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus...” (2 Corinthians 4:14). So there will be life after death because of a coming resurrection, and Jesus Christ being raised from the dead was proof of this fact.

“For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” 1 Corinthians 15:18-19.

Or in other words, without the resurrection, the dead in Christ will perish. And if we hope for reward only in this life, then we are of all men most miserable and pitiable. We may as well eat, drink, and enjoy life because only death ultimately faces us. This is exactly what the Humanists believe today.

Or in other words, the fact that we will be raised is what assures us our labor for the Lord is not in vain. If there is no resurrection, why steadfastly abound in the Lord's work? But since there is a resurrection, then even death cannot prevent our reward being granted us. In fact, if there is no reward after death, then there is no real justice!

Many good people suffer in this life just as much or more than evil people. Many wicked people prosper in this life far above righteous people. Many criminals and sinners are neither caught nor punished. So justice demands a resurrection so the righteous may ultimately be rewarded, and the wicked can be ultimately punished. Thus the resurrection serves as a day of reward!

In simple, plain language Jesus declared that no one would be rewarded until the resurrection takes place at His second coming. This means that none of the righteous dead have yet been rewarded with heaven. All are still waiting in their graves for the judgement and the end of the world. In fact, almost the last words of the Bible confirm this truth:

“Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” John 5:28-29.

Obviously no one can receive either eternal life or punishment and damnation until after they are judged worthy of receiving such a reward. Justice demands that this be done. Therefore each and every one of us are judgment bound, and we will be judged according to our works!

“Let us here the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (see also Matthew 25:31-46.)

Now consider how confusing it would be if rewards and punishments were now being applied to the dead. What purpose would be served by the resurrection? Obviously each soul would already have a determined fate, and the idea of some final judgement would be totally meaningless. But in plain and simple language, the Bible clearly reveals that all the dead are resting in their graves until the judgment occurs and their rewards figured out to be given them at the resurrection.

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (see also 1 Corinthians 15:51-53; John 14:1-3; Matthew 24:30-31).

“And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.” 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9.

So when Christ comes, the first resurrection occurs and all the righteous dead are raised to life to receive their reward of immortality, and then together with the righteous living are taken to heaven. But all the wicked living on the earth will be slain by the brightness of His coming. Thus the earth will be left littered with the bodies of the wicked dead whose corpses will be feasted on by scavenger birds until no flesh is left of them (see Revelation 6:14-17, 19:11-18). Yet even these scavengers will eventually run out of food and will die, thus leaving the earth completely desolate (see Jeremiah 4:23-27; Isaiah 24:1,3).

The Bible plainly declares that after Christ comes and the first resurrection takes place, there will be a period of 1000 years, and that none of the wicked will be resurrected back to life until after 1000 years are over! But is there anything living on the earth all through these 1000 years? Yes!

The Devil or Satan or Lucifer is bound upon this desolate earth during these 1000 years, and he cannot escape! (See Revelation 20:2-3). How ironic, that this mighty tempter and deceiver of the earth’s inhabitants throughout some 6000 years of history is now left completely alone with absolutely no one to tempt! During these 1000 years, he will have plenty of time to think, and also to view all the destruction which he is responsible for.

But what will the righteous be doing in heaven with Christ for these 1000 years? As priests and kings they will be reviewing all the cases of the wicked dead – including the wicked angels and Lucifer, and in unison with Christ, will pass judgment upon all the wicked so they can receive their just reward after the second resurrection takes place (see Revelation 20:6, 4; 1 Corinthians 6:2-3).

So the word of God has plainly shown us in truth what is soon to take place. But this is quite a different picture from what is loudly portrayed by the majority of the preachers today! Through various doctrines of devils which are being advocated from the pulpits, book stores, and even in the theaters, such as the Rapture Theory, many have be deceived into believing that after Christ comes there will be a 1000 year period of His rule on earth where the unsaved will have a second chance at salvation! But the Bible of truth reveals a completely different picture, and many are now faced with having to choose between following the word of God, or continuing to follow the cunning lies of men!

“But I would not have you be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.

Here is a perfect picture of true comfort. Paul describes the coming of Jesus and the resurrection of the saints as being the only manner and means of our loved ones being with the Lord, and thus all other ideas are excluded. Then he tells us to “comfort one another with these words.”

If you think about it, there really is no comfort in the belief that some invisible, disembodied spirit-entity leaves the body at death to either be punished or rewarded. Is it really comforting to believe that unsaved dead relatives are now suffering the torment of unquenchable fire? Is there solace believing that dead loved ones are looking down from heaven upon the heart-breaking circumstances occurring to those left behind? No wonder Paul was so specific in describing that the second advent of Jesus and the resurrection are the only ways anyone can be with the Lord after death, and this is really the only true way to be comforted.

All the dead will rise to face the great decrees of the judgement. Whether they went to sleep thousands of years ago, or just five minutes before Jesus appears. The actual time they were dead will seem to them as only a fraction of a second – just like being asleep.

“For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.” 1 Corinthians 15:21-26.

Or in other words, Jesus will reign until He defeats the last enemy, which is death. Death entered because Satan seduced Adam and Eve to sin, and Christ's ultimate victory will occur when He defeats this last remaining enemy. Then “death will be swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:54). And what will the resurrected righteous then say?

This glorious hope of life after death is only made possible by our Lord and “Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10). And very soon, death itself will die by being cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14) to nevermore afflict the children of men!

Jesus is the only way any of us can have life after death. Not Buddha, Christna, Mohammad, Maitreya, or any other spiritualistic medium or shaman can grant you eternal life. And neither can any pope, priest, minister, elder, teacher, nor church grant you eternal life either! Life after death can only be found through Jesus Christ, and if we should reject Jesus Christ as our Saviour, or if after accepting Him we choose to deny and walk away from Him, then we are eternally lost!

So if you have not given your heart to follow Jesus, do so now! Tomorrow may be too late! If you haven’t given your heart to follow the truth as it is in Jesus, do so now! Don’t be one of those who are deceived and lost because you refused to follow Bible truth and kept following false doctrines instead. Today, right now, determine to follow Christ and Bible truth regardless of the cost. Isn’t Christ worth it? His death made the promise of eternal life to all who accept Him a reality! Don’t let it be said that Jesus Christ died in vain for you! Accept Him now, and you will then have a firm and never failing hope of life after death!

Many Christian greetings from Tanzania. I received your e-mail yesterday. Thank you for your encouragement. This case has come at the right time. I have been hunting for such a golden opportunity since January of last year (2011). I wrote informing you that we had an evangelistic meeting near the city of ____ in early January, 2011. The meeting ended with harassment from the police authorities. After one week of preaching, all pastors and priests from different denominations became friends and went to ask for assistance from the police authorities. After being called and told to water down our messages, we refused. The meeting ended since the government had issued the permission which could not be changed. However, we are hated to death. Our message is clear cutting and the majority of these denominations do not want it.

Dear Sessler, from that time we have been selling books and conducting in-house meetings. In September we had another big meeting in the Western part of Tanzania (____). The results were wonderful. However, the SDA Church leaders, there, were not happy since we had exposed their apostasies. Since October 2011, they have been conspiring to stop this movement which always steals their sheep. We had the first encounter at the police station in November 4, 2011. After attacking each other, the police authorities stopped the case as soon as they discovered that I could win and the SDA leadership had no ground for that case even though I told them that I was ready to go to the court of law. In January 9, 2012, they attempted again through the government leaders. I was put in the jail for 24 hours. However, I was released the next day. After the OCD went through the case; he stopped it before taking it to the court of law. He stated that it was just a matter of hatredness which he could not deal with and as such he had no ground to state in the court of law. To their amazement, he told them that there was no case. He gave me the hand of blessing to continue preaching the Present Truth in ____ region.

Dear Sessler, in Mid-February conspired again and I am happy that now I can preach to the whole nation – Tanzania, in the court of law. I have a meagre income even for sustaining my life. I am sacrificing my time and energy so that the people all over Tanzania and even the surrounding countries may get the Present Truth. Preparing an evangelistic Meeting costs me a lot of money. This time, they have prepared it. I am trying to hide my plans because once I tell them of what I shall do in the court of law; they will bribe the judge(s) with a lot of money to cancel that case. I have also told the news reporters never to write anything concerning this case until March 20, 2012. For the first time, in Tanzania, the stones will speak. There are about 6 news reporters, from different mass media, who are eagerly waiting for that day so that they can sell their stuff. I am going to expose the SDA corruptions, not only here in Tanzania, but from the General Conference.

Dear Robert Sessler, these SDA leaders are used to winning every case in America, Europe and Austraria but not this case. I am at peace even as of now. This case may be worse than the previous one at Worms – Martin Luther with the papists. My intention is to preach through news reporters and tarnish completely the image of the SDA Church here in Tanzania. I depend upon God and the news reporters. The court of law is full of bribes. However, I have confidence that with news reporters, the judges will be more careful. According to the constitution of Tanzania, there is no case. They cannot put me into the prison. I am sure that in the court of law I am going to divide the people of Tanzania into two camps – Christians and pagans. I cannot expose my plans. I only need more time to fast and pray. The evidences, I have told them that I shall give in the court of law. Although the police authorities have asked us to reconcile with the SDA leadership; we have refused. Only what we want to be settled is: Who has the real truth – SDAs or Reformers who have left the apostate SDA Church.

Your prayers are highly appreciated. If I win this case, and I am sure to win; The SDAs will have lost their territory in East and Central Africa – more than 9 countries. They have brought this case but it will be for God’’s glory. "Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee……" (Psalms 76:10). Continue to supply me with more materials so that I may use them in this case....

It is three days since I came back from a trip I had taken. I went to ____ city hoping that everything was finalized and mentioning of the case could take place in the court of law. It has been scheduled again on 23/4/2012. The accusers (SDA Union leadership) did not show up. It seems that after learning that I was among the accused, they are much worried that all the evil plans will be exposed to the ordinary church members which they fear much. We insisted to the police authorities to take the case to the court of law. However, they are still pleading with us to leave the case and forgive them. The General Conference Vice-President, Geoffrey Mbwana, was here last week and I know this man since we were teaching together in 1980s. He is an evil man and he might have told the union leaders to abandon this case since he is sure that if I am among the accused; then their evil plans will be open and that will lead the SDA Church to lose a lot of members.

Dear Robert Sessler, I am waiting for that date – 23/4/2012. I know the SDA Church has bribed the police authorities to use whatever means, under their disposal, to cancel the case. It depends upon us – the accused since they are asking us to throw it and continue with our normal routine. It is hard. We want to settle this problem completely. Besides, we plan to use the court of law to alert the ordinary church members that the SDA Church is in apostasy.

Back in the mid to late 60's I had gone to Southern Missionary College to study to become a minister and my prayer was "Lord don't ever let me teach a lie". Well to make a long story short, things just wouldn’t work out for me to get into the studies. Instead I became the assistant manager of the market there on campus. Now I know why things were and they were [that way]. I would have been caught up in the ministry that would have me lying. "Praise His Holy Name" for His guidance.

I am now 72 and beginning to preach at different churches now. I have exposed the SDA/Catholic song books, and one church is getting rid of them. Another is hinting at doing so also. As for exposing the "bibles” of the devil's handiwork, that sure stirs up a hornets nest real quick, since I call them “God’s trash and Satan’s treasure”.

“God has called His church in this day as He called ancient Israel to stand as a light in the earth, by the mighty cleaver of truth, the message of the first, second, and third angels. He has separated them from the churches and from the world to bring them into a sacred nearness to Himself....” Testimonies, vol 5, p 455-456.

Pastor Bob Sessler, I haven’t heard from you in some time....So glad to hear you are still in the faith. I don’t know what happened to any of the group that I was with then when I knew you. Do you know what happened to any of them? I went on the road right after that in ‘84.

I am sorry bro bob for not writing you for I have been so busy for my missionary work here and for preparing for our camp meeting here to be held here in our place this coming April 1-7. I'd been very busy also for few weeks in looking for a good place to be used as our camp site and preparing programs and plans for camp meeting. We are praying that God will bless and refreshed all our brethren this coming gathering. But though busy for this, we are still doing our schedule of visiting churches here in ____ area, doing house to house, giving encouragement and Bible studies and most of the time health lecture. Last Feb, we held our fellowship and meet all our brethren here in ____ and ____ Provinces. This coming March 22, thursday I'll be going to ____ in ____ and maybe in ____ to meet our brethren there and co-workers and to attend the workers meeting and then general council meeting. I included also in this trip the plan to meet and see Bro ____, to have time sharing with him and to give to him some of the Bibles that his group needs. Since we need also some Bibles here for our brethren here who still don’t have Bibles and for those people that we newly met that asked us to give them too, I just divided the funds for Bro ____'s group and some here. So we thank you for the help that you sent....

I thank God for His goodness for the past months, for guiding us, taking care of my family, and keeping us safe always especially during our travel and doing His work. Thank God that He brought us home safe from our travel to ____ last end of March for attending the workers meeting there. There I met with other workers in God's vineyard and our other brethren there also. We talked there how to advance and progress His cause and settle some small issues that brought little annoyances to God's church. When I went there in ____, I purposely to meet also bro ____, the one that you recommended to me, so that I could meet and know him and have time sharing with him, and give to him the Bibles that they are requesting from you. I tried to communicate him before and while I was in travel, but sadly I never received any reply from him even up to now. But before we left ____, I told our brother there who is working also for the Lord in that area of bro ____ if he could be the one to meet him and work for him and his group, and he is willing to do that. But we never had an address or contact number of bro ____ that is why we had a hard time communicating to him.

Anyway, last April 1-7, we held our camp meeting here in ____. Most of our known brethren here in ____ attended and only few didn't. We had also some of our brethren in ____ and ____ who came. Its been a great camp meeting, where we consecrated ourselves for the whole week with the Lord, where our minds drawn away from temporal things and directed to heavenly and sacred things. We had a long time studying the truth, reviewing our pillars of doctrine, having time for consecration and prayers. 13 souls decided to accept Christ through baptism and others renewed their vows through re-

You know bro bob, two weeks before that camp meeting, we never had found a place where we can held our camp meeting. Though we'd seen some possible site, but we got problems with the owners because they asked for expensive rentals. So we pray that the Lord will provide us a place with low rentals. And God has great plans for His cause. He gave us a great place here with low rentals than the place that we have seen before and more than anything else He directed us to that place because He has a faithful child in that place in the person of daughter of the owner. During that camp meeting, He touched the heart of this youth and she became interested to hear the truth. And now after that meeting she is already attending 2 Sabbaths with us, and is very zealous now in sharing the truth to others especially to his family. She is the one that is giving Bible study to her love ones. I really praise God, He has wonderful and great plan for His children. He led us in that place because He has this youth that He wants to be led to His fold and whom He can use for His cause. We thanked God for providing us all that we need in that camp meeting. We all went home blessed and refreshed.

Christian greetings from this way. I been sick. I could not easily stand [as] I would feel dizzy all the time I stand up. Only when in sitting position could feel better. I [was] tested and they [told me that] typhoid fever should have been cause of this health situation.

I am once again pleased to update you that the little flock that remained after suffering that major shaking (shock) of our former brethren departing from us due to our belief in the organization issue, is slowly gaining strength to face the future. In the mean time, the church has so far arranged a revival meeting the first weekend of March. We have invited our scattered brethren throughout the whole of Zimbabwe field to meet at my place. We are also looking forward to partake of our Lord' supper.

However, as for me I am currently suffering from a foot that was injured when I was returning from doing evangelistic work two weeks ago. The foot has so far taken a long time to heal, and therefore is cause for concern to my family as they are now suspecting that the foot may have been injured so badly that it may require the attention of the surgeon.
